Do you want to contribute to a sustainable Gävleborg? Then the County Administrative Board of Gävleborg is the workplace for you.
The Project Unit is part of the Environmental Department at the County Administrative Board of Gävleborg.
In the unit, we work with project activities related to nature and water conservation. We work on projects linked to both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species, restoration of watercourses, and protection of endangered species.
We are now looking for 3–6 people to join our field team for parts of this year's field season. The positions involve work on several projects and have varying durations, approximately 2–5 months from June to September.
Seize the opportunity to apply for a fun and developing job!
About the Job
Your main tasks as field staff will consist of field activities distributed among the unit's projects. This may include inventorying freshwater pearl mussels, fishing at sea, electrofishing, mowing, and inventorying and manually controlling invasive species.
The main projects for the 2026 field season involve work with the endangered freshwater pearl mussel within the EU project Rivers of LIFE and other restoration projects in the unit, as well as combating invasive plants in Natura 2000 areas. Other smaller projects are also ongoing in various locations in the county where the field team is involved.
The work includes wading in flowing water with water goggles and heavy lifting in awkward terrain. Part of the work involves fishing with nets and other equipment, as well as potential electrofishing. You may need to reverse with a trailer and drive a boat at sea, sometimes in rough waters. Tasks also include maintenance of boats, tools, and other equipment. The positions may involve preparatory and follow-up work in the field activities of the projects as well as other operational tasks.
The field team is based at the County Administrative Board's premises in Gävle, but most of the fieldwork takes place elsewhere. Several of the projects involve weekly overnight stays in other parts of the county, usually 3–4 nights in a row per trip and in some periods several weeks in a row (excluding weekends). The County Administrative Board arranges accommodation during these weeks. Work in other locations will primarily occur at the beginning of the season, while the end of the season mainly involves daily departures from Gävle. The length of the workday varies greatly depending on field conditions such as terrain, catch, or weather.
About You
We are looking for someone who is driven, responsible, and can solve problems that arise. It is important that you have good collaboration skills and are flexible and self-sufficient. You are quality-conscious, stable, and proactive.
You must have the capacity to walk in terrain, wade in flowing water with equipment, and carry field equipment to and from the field area. You must be able to stay in another location for most of the employment period, as there may be several workweeks (even in succession) far from Gävle.
The following competencies are meritorious:
- Higher education in natural sciences with relevant orientation, or other education or work experience that we consider equivalent
- Fieldwork in the areas included in the tasks
- Previous experience of fieldwork in a government agency
- Species knowledge of flora and fauna, especially fish
- Boat driving license or boating experience
- Electrofishing certificate, experience in electrofishing
- Brushcutter training/Brushcutter license (RA or higher)
- Knowledge of Excel and GIS, preferably with experience in ArcGIS PRO
- Experience with the applications Fieldmaps and Survey 123
We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
