Research Engineer

Description

The UPSC transformation platform primarily handles transformations of aspen/hybrid aspen, along with associated sterile work and work with plants in tissue culture.

Five people work on the platform, some of whom are employed at Umeå University (Umu) and others at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). We are now seeking a research engineer for the Department of Physiological Botany. The position is part-time (60%) and is limited to 6 months. Start date is May 17, 2026.

Responsibilities

You will work with all tasks within the platform, primarily preparing sterile growth media and working in a sterile bench to cut and replant shoots. Furthermore, you will perform Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of stem pieces of aspen. You will also have your own responsibility for caring for some of the plants at the platform.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a master's degree in plant physiology or equivalent. Experience working with plants using sterile techniques, as well as practical experience with Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of hybrid aspen, is required for the position. Practical experience in handling hybrid aspen is also a requirement. In addition, good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. You must also have good teamwork skills, be able to work both in a group and independently, and have a very good ability to take responsibility and be careful and systematic in your work.

Experience in molecular biology work and working with the database program Filemaker is an advantage.

The position is part-time (60%) and is limited to 6 months. Start date is 2026-05-17.
