Welcome to apply for a residency at Södra Älvsborg Hospital, Borås.

At SÄS, we offer 21 residency positions with 18 months of service and 4 residency positions with a pedagogical focus lasting 19 months. These 25 residency positions have start dates in August and November 2026.

The residency will provide you with clinical experience and education to meet the requirements for medical licensure while becoming an important part of the hospital's daily operations at all hours of the day. As a resident with us at SÄS, you will have the opportunity to take significant responsibility and prepare for your future role as a licensed physician.

We continuously work on development and strive to improve the residency program at SÄS, which means we expect you, as a resident, to be involved in this work.

Half of the residents will start their service in medical specialties, and the other half in surgical specialties. The residency includes on-call duties during weekends and nights. Some parts of your service may take place in Skene. Psychiatry service in outpatient care and placement at health centers may be relevant in various municipalities within SÄS's catchment area. Your health center placement will be presented when you are offered a position. If you accept your residency, the health center placement will remain fixed unless the educational environment changes. In that case, you will be reassigned to a health center with a similar geographic distance from Borås.

Being a resident with us means, among other things, that you will receive:

• A one-week hospital-wide introduction followed by an introduction at each block placement
• A residency director throughout your service
• Clinical supervisors at the various placements
• Practical training in emergency medicine in a simulated environment
• Evaluation of your service after each placement
• Mandatory training sessions
• SÄS joint residency days
• Participation in the residency forum
• The opportunity to attend a self-chosen external course reviewed by Lipus

For those with a pedagogical residency, the following is also included:

• Instructor training in medical simulation, supervisor training, practical supervision of medical students in a course on consultation skills and early professional contact, as well as practical supervision of medical students during simulation.

Structure for the clinical parts of the residency:

• 4.5 months in surgical specialties
• 4.5 months in medical specialties
• 3 months in psychiatric specialties
• 6 months in general medicine

Qualifications

To be eligible for a residency position with us, you need to meet one of the following basic requirements:

• You have completed your medical degree and/or have a decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare to do residency in Sweden.
• You are expected to complete your medical degree or receive a decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare to do residency in Sweden by July 31, 2026. Attach a transcript and registration certificate showing which term you are studying. You will need to provide a valid diploma before July 31 if you are offered employment.

Knowledge of the Swedish language at a C1 level according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages is also a basic requirement.

As a person, we are looking for someone who:

• is empathetic and has the ability to collaborate. You take responsibility for your professional development by accepting constructive criticism and feedback. In stressful and pressured situations, you have a strategy for prioritizing and managing the situation while not being afraid to ask for help. To be eligible for the pedagogical residency, we see that you have a particular interest in education and possess leadership qualities.

Meritorious in the selection process are:

• Clinical experience
• Research beyond basic education
• Formal experience in leadership and education (such as a teaching assistant)
• Extensive healthcare-related work experience outside of medicine or within medicine in another country
• Experience working with us at SÄS and/or at a health center within SÄS's catchment area
• Personal suitability

We recruit residents with a focus on the future competence supply of the catchment area. Local ties may therefore be meritorious.

CV and other information specified in the application must be certified by, for example, service certificates or recommendation letters. In your application, you can indicate whether you wish to apply for the 19-month pedagogical residency and/or the 18-month residency position.

Interviews

We will conduct interviews on March 9-10, 2026. Those invited for an interview will be contacted via email in week 10.

Reference checks

The reference checks for the position will be conducted digitally via a digital reference checking system. If you are called for an interview, you will receive a link to register your references directly in the digital tool, and reference checks will begin before the interviews are conducted.

Other

We will request extracts from criminal and suspicion registers for all who are offered a position.
