Swedish Prison and Probation Service is Growing – We Are Looking for More Employees!

Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transport.

Halmstad Prison is a closed prison in the second highest security class. The prison has 160 employees, most of whom are correctional officers. It is located five kilometers west of the city center, right next to the Flygstaden shopping area in Halmstad. The distance to Halmstad city center is about 10-15 minutes by bus or bike.

A detention center is currently being built on the prison grounds, with a planned opening in the spring/summer of 2027. This capacity increase will double the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's operations in Halmstad.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you are a central part of the security work and are part of a team that together contributes to safety and order. The role involves meeting and guiding clients and motivating them towards a life without crime. The work is varied but also relies on recurring routines that create the structure and predictability that both clients and the operation need.

As a correctional officer, you are the one who opens the door to the living quarters in the morning and locks it in the evening. You accompany the inmates to work and education and supervise the exercise yard and training facility. A large part of your workday involves security and control measures, such as room and body searches and drug testing, while also being responsible for providing clients with supplies during the day.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are crucial. The work can be both physically and mentally challenging, so you need to be stable and secure in your interactions with incarcerated individuals. The job requires endurance over time and the ability to remain steady even when everyday life tests your patience and energy.

You have a genuine interest in working with people and treat everyone with respect and dignity, while also serving as a good role model and supporting positive change for our inmates. You are aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect individuals and can quickly adapt if the situation requires it.

You have good physical ability and can react quickly and with endurance if the situation demands it. You have the ability to balance security awareness with a caring approach. You have good judgment and make well-founded decisions even in pressured situations. You find it easy to collaborate and communicate clearly even in challenging situations, while prioritizing safety together with your colleagues. You enjoy working in a structured manner and see the value in a routine-driven everyday life.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Work experience (internships and volunteer work do not count)
  • Complete upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
  • Basic knowledge of using digital tools
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language in speech and writing
  • Good physical ability to act in incidents
  • Good mental stability and ability to handle challenging situations
  • Driver's license (B)

It is meritorious if you have:

  • Work experience from correctional services, security work, military, surveillance, psychiatry, or care and treatment work, or from other activities that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
  • Multilingualism
  • Experience in organizing or leading people in or outside of work life, such as sports or volunteer activities.

We offer:

  • A meaningful job where you have the opportunity to make a difference.
  • Paid training, including conflict management and physical intervention.
  • A supportive collegial environment where we take care of each other.
