Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Here, research and education focus on human health and quality of life. The Department of Clinical Sciences is organized into four sections and 16 different subject areas.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Clinical Sciences houses the largest maternity clinic in the Nordic countries. Broad research is conducted in clinical and preclinical areas within obstetrics. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a strong collaboration with the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology, where a significant part of the preclinical work is carried out.

Subject Description
The subject includes studies of immunological mechanisms underlying normal pregnancy development and the pathophysiological processes that can lead to pregnancy complications. Research focuses on how the regulation of the immune system affects conditions such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and miscarriage, as well as how disturbances in immunological signaling pathways contribute to these conditions. The subject encompasses preclinical and translational research aimed at identifying and characterizing biomarkers for early diagnosis and developing and evaluating potential treatment targets for pregnancy-induced diseases. By integrating immunology, reproductive medicine, and molecular methods, the subject creates a foundation for improved understanding, prevention, and treatment of complications during pregnancy.
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include conducting research in the subject area of the position. Furthermore, it includes actively seeking external funding to establish an independent research line and developing research collaborations within and outside the department at both national and international levels. The research has a clearly translational focus and encompasses both in vivo and in vitro models. The aim is to increase understanding of pregnancy complications, with the goal of identifying underlying mechanisms and contributing to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The work is conducted in close collaboration with clinical research at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, enabling continuous exchange between basic science and patient-centered perspectives.
The employee is expected to actively participate in teaching various programs at the Sahlgrenska Academy and engage in various educational assignments at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Pedagogical commitment and progression are central to the role, and during the first year of employment, higher education pedagogical training must be completed. This includes both formal pedagogical courses and documented development in the teaching role. The employee is expected to supervise master's students and doctoral candidates.
Job responsibilities also include communicating with the surrounding community, the so-called third task.
To ensure good language and communication skills in teaching and supervision, the employee must have achieved at least level B2 in spoken and written Swedish according to the CEFR scale no later than six months before the assistant professorship expires. Gothenburg University will offer courses in Swedish that are mandatory as part of the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as an assistant professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and Gothenburg University's employment regulations.
Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have reached equivalent competence within seven years before the application period for the assistant professorship has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and supported by certificates.
The ability to teach in English is a requirement.
