Ophthalmologist at the Eye Clinic, Visby Hospital

In Region Gotland, you can develop and grow, both as an individual and together with others. When you work with us, you contribute to making Gotland an even better place for people in all walks of life. We make each other better.

The Eye Clinic

Visby Hospital has a broad healthcare mission and provides Gotland with acute and planned specialist care.

The island's location requires the resources of a large hospital but at the same time offers the closeness and community of a smaller hospital. A large number of services are represented within both surgical and medical specialties. The healthcare mission in Gotland is characterized by a wide clinical breadth and a high proportion of acute patients. This places special demands on collaboration with other specialties and professional groups to provide patients with optimal and safe care.

The Eye Clinic offers basic, and to some extent, highly specialized eye care for Gotland's approximately 60,000 residents. The operation is conducted in close collaboration with other surgical and medical specialties. Continuous work is done to further develop the operation and thus improve care for the population of Gotland.

We have about 13-14,000 visits per year where we perform outpatient activities in general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and eyelid surgeries, as well as consultations for medical retina with injection activities.

The operation has primary on-call responsibility during the day and standby duty part of the weekend.

Patients in need of highly specialized care are primarily referred to the eye clinics at St. Erik's Eye Hospital or Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala.

We have continuously recurring consulting physicians with specialized knowledge in pediatric ophthalmology, corneal diseases, cataract surgery, and plastic surgery, for example, for the operation of tumors, eyelids, tear ducts, and strabismus. We are about 3-4 specialists per week and one resident physician. The clinic is well-equipped with, among other things, multi-spot laser, YAG laser, Humphrey perimetry, and OCT.

Your Responsibilities

Our specialty is characterized by both medical and surgical patients, which involves many different tasks. The majority are planned outpatient visits, but a certain part also involves being on call and managing acute patient cases. You will be responsible for examinations and assessments in close collaboration with experienced colleagues. You will work in a team with nursing staff and will also be involved in training other professional groups in the operation as well as resident physicians, medical students, and colleagues from the district.

We primarily offer a one-year temporary position with great chances of a residency position if we get along well and enjoy working together. The temporary position is under residency-like conditions, and you will be able to credit the time towards a potential future residency position.

Who Are You?

We are looking for a licensed physician with a strong commitment and a strong desire to learn and develop in the field of ophthalmology.

We expect you to have a particular interest in the disease panorama and patient group in this area. Since we are a surgical specialty, it is important that you have a surgical interest and aptitude, as well as experience from surgical operations, preferably in ophthalmology. It is beneficial if you enjoy being challenged by varying clinical situations and are solution-oriented.

Our operation is small in size, which makes good collaboration skills, flexibility, and personal suitability extremely important. You have an interest and commitment to operational development and the ability to educate and collaborate with other professional groups and specialties.

You who are applying are a licensed physician and you master Swedish fluently in both speech and writing.

Connection to Gotland is important, and we would like you to be registered on the island. It is advantageous if you can see a future on Gotland even after your temporary position and are willing to do your residency training with us.

Before a hiring decision is made, a background check will be conducted through an extract from the criminal record.
