We are now looking for two PhD candidates in the didactics of natural sciences and technology, based at the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Learning (IBL).

Your responsibilities

The current PhD positions will focus on gender-equal, evidence-based education in natural sciences and technology (STEM) as well as digital learning environments within the STEM field.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research projects you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have completed a master's degree or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

Specific eligibility is granted to those who have:

  • A teaching degree, including courses equivalent to 30 higher education credits in a subject relevant to the research field of natural sciences and/or technology didactics, including a thesis of at least 15 credits at the advanced level.
  • At least 90 higher education credits in a subject relevant to the research field of natural sciences and/or technology didactics, including a thesis of at least 15 credits at the advanced level.

Furthermore, the applicant should have good proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Applicants will be assessed based on their ability to benefit from doctoral education, primarily as demonstrated in submitted materials. In the selection process, academic results that show creativity, the ability for independent judgment and critical analysis, as well as good writing skills will be considered. The most qualified candidates will be required to complete writing tests in Swedish and English and will be invited for an interview.

A statement of purpose of a maximum of three A4 pages must be attached to the application. The statement should reflect on the issues that the applicant considers interesting and relevant to research.

LEN conducts education and research in the field of educational sciences. The undergraduate education at the department primarily targets educational institutions for younger children. LEN also provides teaching for middle and high school, as well as digital science centers. The research environments that the project can be linked to are called Technology, Natural Sciences, and Didactics (TekNaD) and Visual Learning and Communication (VLK). The doctoral education in the didactics of technology and natural sciences is part of the doctoral school FontD (National Doctoral School in the Didactics of Natural Sciences and Technology) at Linköping University, https://liu.se/forskning/fontd (https://liu.se/forskning/fontd). As a PhD candidate, you will thus be part of a broader subject-didactic research context and take certain courses together with PhD candidates from other institutions within FontD.

About the position

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.

The position is temporary, normally for four years full-time. Extension of the position up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.

Start date: September 1, 2026.
