Do you want to become a researcher and contribute knowledge about students' reading and writing? We are now looking for two PhD candidates in education for the FEELIT - Foundations for Equitable and Engaging Literacy Teaching in Primary Grades research school.

Your tasks

The positions at Linköping University are linked to the FEELIT research school. The research school has a clear focus on the reading and writing development of younger students and includes central themes such as structured and explicit teaching, inclusive teaching for students from diverse backgrounds and needs, and how children's literature can be used to enhance students' engagement and understanding of literary texts. The complete program description for FEELIT can be obtained from Åsa Elwér (contact details below).

At Linköping University, the intended research projects will focus on younger students' reading and writing abilities in relation to multilingualism (one position) or on younger students who are advanced in their knowledge development compared to their peers (one position).

Within the research school, you will study the mandatory courses within the university and research school and participate in regular meetings at the participating institutions and with research supervisors. You will attend conferences to present your research.

As a PhD candidate, you will dedicate yourself to your doctoral education and the research projects you are involved in. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have a master's degree in educational science or behavioral science, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. Proficiency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

Particularly meritorious is an educational background in pedagogy or educational work or a subject with equivalent relevance for the FEELIT research school and one of the two research projects to be conducted at LiU. Documented experience of the following is also particularly meritorious:

  • Teaching students in early school age, including the subject of Swedish
  • Qualitative and/or quantitative (statistical) analysis
  • Independently formulating and addressing scientific questions in master's theses

Particular emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

A research plan of about two pages should be attached to the application. The plan should include a proposal for a possible research question relevant to the research school, the pedagogical knowledge area, and one of the two focuses at LiU:

  • Younger students' reading and writing abilities in relation to multilingualism
  • Younger students who are advanced in their knowledge development regarding reading and writing compared to their peers

The plan should also include a description of a method that can be used to answer the question.
