Your responsibilities

As a PhD student, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research projects you are involved in. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.

The doctoral education is conducted within the framework of the research school REMATH II (Researching Practice-Based Mathematics Teacher Education), which is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is offered in collaboration between Stockholm University, Karlstad University, Linköping University, and Mälardalen University. REMATH II is a further development of REMATH I. The aim of the research school is to make visible how mathematics teachers' work and practice, at all levels of the school system, can be made accessible for teacher students' learning. The central question of the research school is what is required for mathematics teacher students to acquire the professional knowledge and skills needed for well-founded and equitable teaching.

Your qualifications

To be admitted to the doctoral program, the applicant must have both general and specific eligibility as outlined below, and these must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made.

  • General eligibility for admission to doctoral education is granted to those who have obtained a degree at the advanced level or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
  • Specific eligibility for admission to the doctoral program in mathematics education is granted to applicants who have at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to mathematics education.

Particularly meritorious for the position is a subject teacher degree in mathematics as well as having completed an independent project (thesis) of at least 15 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to the field of mathematics education research with a focus on grades 7-9 or upper secondary school. Good language skills in Swedish are also particularly meritorious for the position.

Furthermore, the applicant must have good language skills in English, both spoken and written.

Your workplace

The position is located in the Department of Analysis and Didactics (ANDI), which consists of about twenty teachers, researchers, and PhD students. Research in mathematics is conducted both interdisciplinary and applied within various branches of mathematical analysis as well as mathematics education. About the position

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.

The position is time-limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of employment for up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.

Start date in August 2026 or by agreement.
