Department of Clinical Sciences

Are you ready to take on the responsibility of managing the operations and care unit at the UDS equine department and, in a leadership role, develop our employees to their full potential alongside a competent and vision-driven management team and faculty? Welcome with your application to us at Clinical Sciences and the equine department!

About the Job

Your main task will be to have operational responsibility for the surgical department and shared responsibility for the care unit. This means ensuring efficient workflows and job satisfaction together with the staff - this is crucial for quality assurance of the basic education of veterinarians and veterinary nurses. You will have personnel responsibility for a group of employees whom you will coach in everyday life with the goal of harnessing their potential and engagement. You will be part of the local operations group at the UDS equine department. You report to the department head who is ultimately responsible for the operations.

Alongside your managerial position, you will work clinically in a varied everyday life in a 24/7 operation at Sweden's only university animal hospital. Employees at the equine department work on a list service agreement, which means that work can be scheduled at any time of the day.

We offer you leadership development through our management and leadership training within SLU as well as training in pedagogy.

The managerial assignment is temporary and runs until 2028-09-30, when a new head will decide whether the assignment can be extended.

Your Background

You are a licensed veterinarian, licensed veterinary nurse, or animal caretaker.

  • As a licensed veterinarian, you have the authority to practice veterinary medicine in Sweden. You have broad medical and surgical competence and therefore meet the need to work independently and supervise less experienced colleagues in emergency operations. It is advantageous if you have step 1 competence in equine diseases, or are a Diplomate. You have been clinically active for at least five years.
  • As a licensed veterinary nurse, you have extensive experience in anesthesia for horses.
  • As an animal caretaker with competence for horses (level 2, D9 horse), you have extensive experience working in the surgical department. Previous experience working in a 24/7 animal hospital is advantageous.

You have an understanding of workflows and the importance of leadership in the team. Previous experience and formal education in leadership and other responsible roles are advantageous. Likewise, education in pedagogy. Since the position involves contact with employees, animal owners, and students, you need to have good knowledge of the Swedish language in both spoken and written form.

You easily see the bigger picture and are motivated to steer towards set goals. You are a coaching leader who finds it easy to create relationships based on respect and trust in the individual. You are inspired by improvement work and have a strong interest in allowing others to grow in their roles. You have a basic understanding of economics.

As a person, you are structured and have good self-awareness. You are communicative with a good ability to create and maintain good relationships with students, clients, and colleagues. You have great integrity, are professional as a leader, and a role model in the clinical environment. You take significant and independent responsibility for your tasks but have the judgment to ask for help when you need it. You have a pronounced interest in developing both veterinary medicine and as a leader.

As animal health personnel at the university animal hospital, you have a scientific approach and interest in evidence-based care. You are interested in teaching and participating in creating good conditions for basic education and research.

In this recruitment, we will place great emphasis on both your personal abilities and clinical competence, understanding of operations, and your commitment to a good working environment and high-quality veterinary care in a university environment.
