Karlskoga Prison opened in 1984 with 44 prison places. Since then, much has happened, and in August 2022, new modules were inaugurated, and the prison now has 199 places. Here you will find a workplace that is constantly evolving. You will meet approximately 197 colleagues who, together with the prison manager, work towards common goals in an ongoing transformation journey. Karlskoga Prison is a class 2 facility with male clients, which is the second highest security classification of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As the duty officer, you will, in consultation with the correctional officer, be responsible for security at the prison and operationally lead and distribute daily tasks. You communicate directly and clearly and contribute to a safe and efficient work environment.

The duty officer is on duty from Monday to Sunday and, outside office hours, is the local highest operational decision-maker under the correctional manager on standby. You represent the employer and guarantee that the management line is maintained all the way to all staff, anchors decisions made, and holds a support function for the correctional officer.

Some of the tasks included in the position are:

  • Follow up on daily security work and take action as needed
  • Create and develop systems for monitoring daily security efforts
  • Operationally lead the work within the prison
  • Assess the need for staffing at the prison and remand center and rank personnel for the day's operations
  • Ensure that searches are conducted
  • Participate in admissions and discharges, etc.
  • Follow up that security routines are adhered to
  • Conduct exercises, security talks, and security assessments - plan transports

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important to us. We are looking for someone who is secure, stable, and has good self-awareness. You have a good understanding of how people absorb knowledge and adapt your way of leading and distributing work according to the recipient's conditions. In your professional practice, you have good judgment and integrity. You possess a personal maturity that allows you to adapt your behavior and leadership to different situations with loyalty to the mission and regulations of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

Personal qualities that we will value include the ability to work and prioritize rationally under stress or high workload while maintaining security awareness.

Since you will operationally lead the work at the prison and remand center in consultation with the correctional officer and at the same time have close contact with other colleagues in the operations, you need to have excellent collaboration skills and the ability to build good professional relationships with both colleagues and management. We are also looking for someone who can be direct and clear in their communication to contribute to a safe and efficient work environment. You should also have a physical condition that allows you to act physically if the situation requires it.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Completed upper secondary school education in the form of a diploma or high school graduation.
  • Approved correctional education.
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English in both spoken and written form.
  • Experience working within the correctional system.
  • Driver's license class B.

It is advantageous if you have:

  • Completed the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's internal duty officer training and have worked as a duty officer within the last five years.
  • Completed training in pepper spray and baton.
  • Experience leading staff.
  • Other leadership training that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant to the position.
