Department Head for the Winter Unit

The security policy situation in our region and globally has changed, and the government has therefore decided to strengthen military capability. The importance of northern Sweden and the Nordic region has increased, and the need for winter capability and winter training within the Armed Forces, as well as among our partner countries, has thus grown. The Armed Forces' Winter Unit (FMVE) is part of I 19 and has the main task of developing and coordinating winter and subarctic capabilities within the entire Armed Forces.

We are looking for someone who is flexible, solution-oriented, and wants to be part of the development of subarctic capability. As the department head, your main task will be to lead the training department with a primary focus on conducting and developing the courses for which FMVE is responsible. The department is also responsible for contact with schools, centers, and units, and contributes expertise within the framework of the development work that FMVE participates in.

About the Unit

FMVE contributes to the Armed Forces' operational units and allied units being able to operate in all climate areas, particularly in winter environments. FMVE is located in Boden and is organized under the Norrbotten Regiment I 19. FMVE consists of management, national training department, international training department, and development department. Collaboration also occurs with our Nordic countries and allies.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead the national training department.
  • Responsible for the implementation and development of national courses, primarily in winter capability and mountain safety.
  • Implementation of assigned projects according to operational orders.
  • Collaborate with and follow up on units, schools, and centers.
  • Follow up and evaluate cold injuries within the Armed Forces.
  • Participate in the Armed Forces' safety inspections regarding cold weather.
  • Conduct validation of winter capability at units.
  • The department has subarctic diving capability and is responsible for capabilities in mountain and avalanche.

Requirements for Education/Knowledge

  • Professional officer, OF 3 or OR 8.
  • Employed in the Armed Forces
  • Swedish citizen
  • Good ability to express oneself in speech and writing (Swedish/English)
  • Driver's license minimum B

Personal Qualities

  • Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
  • The work requires a good ability to independently plan, execute, and evaluate results of performed tasks and assignments within the organization.
  • You have good communication and collaboration skills.
  • You are meticulous and have a structured working method and the ability to change pace when necessary.
  • Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships.
  • Interest in outdoor life, both in winter and summer, as well as good physical ability.

Meritorious Education/Knowledge

  • Experience working in and independently managing projects.
  • Previous service at a school/center within the Armed Forces
  • Good experience working in a subarctic climate.
  • Languages other than English and Swedish.
  • Good administrative skills in Armed Forces support systems.
  • Military driver's license/permit for snowmobiles, tracked vehicles, heavy trucks with trailers, and wheel loaders.
  • Good personal skills (weapons, physical performance ability, FUSA/SUSA).

Work location: Boden, with periodic assignments at other locations within and outside the country.
Start date: By agreement after approved security clearance.

The position includes the ability to participate in international missions. The Armed Forces apply individual salary setting.

I 19 is one of Sweden's largest regiments with operations in Boden, Kiruna, Tåme, and Grubbnäsudden/Lomben. The main location and management for the regiment is in Boden.

The regiment's most important task is to build combat units, and in the coming years, I 19 will gradually develop the new Norrbotten Brigade. By 2028, the regiment should be able to train, stockpile, and mobilize the entire brigade, including the associated functional units; management, field operations, air defense, and logistics. The brigade should be able to fight in all environments but be specialized for combat in the subarctic environment of the Nordic region.

The regiment also includes the Armed Forces' winter unit, which has the task of coordinating and supporting the development of the Armed Forces' winter capability.

The conscription training is conducted at the Norrbotten Armored Battalion, which is responsible for training and maintaining units for the Norrbotten Brigade. The regiment also consists of the regimental staff, Armed Forces Health, Garrison Support Unit, Logistics Unit, and Local Planning Unit.
