Do you want to make a difference and contribute to a safe, clean, and vibrant marine environment?
Are you a calm and flexible person who maintains composure even in crisis situations? The Coast Guard is currently seeking recruits!
The Coast Guard is responsible for environmental rescue at sea – we minimize the impact of oil spills and other harmful substances to protect nature and marine life.
Another important area of responsibility is search and rescue, where we help save lives when such situations arise and our assistance is needed. While we maintain readiness for life and environmental rescue, we also work with supervision and control as well as order maintenance and crime prevention at sea. The Coast Guard is also part of the total defense and must be prepared to work with other societal actors to prevent, resist, and act in the event of a societal disruption.
Description
As a coast guard officer, you will have an active job where you and your colleagues solve various tasks in all weather conditions and around the clock, every day of the year. Since the work as a coast guard officer is a readiness job, everyday routine work during patrols is interspersed with intense work shifts. You may face challenging and difficult situations, such as encountering people in vulnerable situations or those suspected of committing crimes. You live and work closely with your colleagues, and cooperation between you is essential to solve the tasks. This creates a workplace characterized by trust, community, and professional pride.
We are now looking for 24 recruits for our basic training starting on August 17, 2026! The basic training begins with about a year of studies with theory and practice based at the Coast Guard's training facilities in Karlskrona. This is followed by about six months of sea service practice at one of our twenty coastal stations. To be fully trained and employed as a coast guard officer, you must also have completed Ship's Officer Class VII and Engine Officer Class VII. For those lacking one or both of these courses, they will be included in your basic training. The study period is therefore between 1.5 to 2.5 years depending on your prior knowledge.
The studies are full-time and the teaching focuses on problem-solving. Instruction is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, and group exercises. As a recruit in the Coast Guard, you will receive a temporary employment with salary during the training period. After successful completion of the training, the employment will transition to a permanent position at one of our coastal stations in Sweden, with a special focus on one of our largest vessels, KBV 002, stationed at the coastal station in Slite. Placement will always occur where the operational need is greatest.
Qualifications
- Basic eligibility for higher education
- Swedish citizenship
- Driver's license B without traffic conditions for automatic transmission
- Approved 2-year medical certificate for seafarers in unrestricted service, group 1 deck-safety crew (TSFS2011:117), valid until at least 2026-08-31 (required later in the recruitment process).
It is advantageous if you have registered sea time with the Swedish Transport Agency in deck, bridge, or engine positions. Experience in navigation and maneuvering deemed relevant by the employer is also desirable. Education or other work experience from similar fields that the Coast Guard operates in is also a merit. Furthermore, experience from work in emergency services or relevant work experience from another readiness profession is also advantageous. Relevant technical experience is also a merit.
We have high demands for personal suitability with the ability to handle people and authority. You have a strong sense of justice and want to work for a safe and secure maritime environment. As a coast guard officer, you often live in close quarters with your colleagues, which places high demands on flexibility and adaptability, as well as enjoying working closely with your colleagues over time and throughout all hours of the day. Furthermore, you can handle both calm and stressful work shifts as well as the pace changes that the profession requires. You possess high personal maturity, are attentive, and have good judgment and collaboration skills. You are accustomed to working in a digital environment and have a good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in both Swedish and English.
Admission Process
Psychological tests will be conducted as part of the selection process. Interviews will then take place between weeks 11-13. If you are called for an interview, you must bring approved certificates confirming that you meet all admission requirements (medical certificates will be requested later in the process during weeks 17-19). As an applicant, you are responsible for demonstrating that you have basic eligibility for higher education. Read more about basic eligibility here: basic eligibility (https://www.uhr.se/studier-och-antagning/tilltrade-till-hogskolan/Antagning-till-grundniva/). After the interview, a number of candidates will be invited to tests at the National Service and Assessment Agency between weeks 16-19, as well as swimming and maneuvering tests at the Coast Guard during weeks 17-19. If a security clearance is relevant, it will be conducted during weeks 21-22. Conditions
The employment is temporary from August 17, 2026, but no later than March 31, 2028, with the possibility of extension. The Coast Guard participates in overseas missions and international operations. Therefore, the employment includes an obligation to serve abroad when required for the operation. Employment requires an approved drug test and security clearance according to the Security Protection Act. In the case of permanent employment, there is also an obligation to be placed in wartime.
