The Mission of the Icebreakers

The Swedish Maritime Administration's icebreakers play a crucial role in keeping maritime traffic moving during the winter months. Through icebreaker assistance, we ensure that commercial shipping can navigate even under difficult ice conditions in our fairways. During the ice-free part of the year, the icebreakers contribute to other important missions such as fairway maintenance, repairs of maritime safety devices, and other technical efforts along the coast.

Our regular Technical Manager is moving on internally, and we are looking for their replacement.

Job Responsibilities

As Technical Manager, you are responsible for the vessel's operation and maintenance. You have overall responsibility for budget monitoring and resource utilization within the framework of vessel operations, as well as a clear occupational safety responsibility – you ensure that the working environment on board is safe, inclusive, and complies with applicable legislation. The work is carried out in accordance with the vessel's quality system, and you manage documentation in the maintenance system.

You are also responsible for training and coaching new staff and have personnel responsibility for everyone in your department. You will be employed by the Swedish Maritime Administration's Shipping Company, which means you may be required to serve on all icebreakers in the fleet as needed.

To be considered for the role of Technical Manager, you must be:

  • Qualified Marine Engineer
  • Valid medical certificate for seafarers
  • You have several years of experience as a senior officer
  • Good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English in speech and writing
  • Certificate for basic safety training
  • Certificate for advanced firefighting
  • Certificate for rescue craft and emergency boats
  • Certificate for basic first aid training

It is advantageous if you have

  • Experience from working in icebreaker operations
  • Experience with control and monitoring systems as well as PMS systems
  • Experience with maintenance systems
  • Experience with diesel-electric propulsion
  • Worked with ISM and quality systems

The position may require Swedish citizenship. A security clearance with a background check may be conducted before a job offer.
