JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Working as a firefighter
As a firefighter, you work to mitigate the damage that has occurred. This can involve many different types of interventions such as extinguishing fires, rescue operations, and decontamination in chemical and traffic accidents, lifesaving in drowning incidents, and more. You will also work with preventive fire protection, training, and projects in various ways.
Different paces
During a work shift, you will face tasks that require different work paces. When the alarm goes off, it is essential to react quickly and focus 100% on your task. The rest of the working time is spent on drills, preventive work, equipment maintenance, physical training, and more.
People, teamwork & movement
The firefighter profession is an exciting, rewarding, and versatile job. You will come into contact with people in various situations, work together with colleagues in a team, and get plenty of physical activity. Therefore, you must be interested in and skilled at handling people and be able to collaborate. Additionally, the work imposes physical demands on you, which are maintained through training and practice.
Working hours
Since our full-time station is staffed around the clock, you will often work shift work. You will work days, nights, and weekends, which means you must be able to adapt to different working hours. During the summer period, we will work around the clock.
Development opportunities
After working for a few years as a firefighter, you can often specialize in more functional areas such as respiratory protection, radio/telecommunication, and more. You may also have the opportunity to further your education in rescue management and supervision at one of the schools of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
Special competencies at our full-time stations include underwater diving in Kalmar, high-altitude in Oskarshamn, and drones in Nybro.
Räddningstjänsten Sydost works long-term on the recruitment of firefighters. We strive to better reflect society at large, which is why we welcome female applicants and applicants from different ethnic backgrounds. Working as a summer substitute increases your chances of obtaining a permanent position in our association in the future.
