Assistant Professor in Public Administration

The position of assistant professor is a merit-based appointment aimed at providing the employee with the opportunity to develop their pedagogical and scientific skills. An assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor at the end of the appointment. If the assistant professor is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, they will be promoted and employed permanently as an associate professor.

Subject Description

The School of Public Administration conducts education, research, and collaboration within the subject of public administration. The education includes bachelor's and master's programs, doctoral education, and commissioned training. The School of Public Administration is also responsible for courses in the preschool teacher program and the principal program. Education and research in the interdisciplinary subject of public administration focus on three areas: politics, democracy and administration; public management; organization, management, and society.

Currently, research is being conducted on topics such as administration and bureaucracy, professions, localization, AI, cybersecurity, procurement, financial management, migration and labor integration, and legal perspectives. The School of Public Administration welcomes applicants who align with some of our existing research areas as well as those who wish to develop other areas within the subject of public administration.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the assistant professor in public administration consist of half research and half teaching. The teaching component may also include administrative tasks. The languages of instruction are Swedish and English. The responsibilities include:

  • Research in the field of public administration. The assistant professor is free to choose research questions, develop theoretical ideas, collect data, and select research methods. It includes actively seeking external funding for their own research and actively participating in the department's research environments and seminar activities. The assistant professor is also expected to participate in the international discourse through participation in conferences and through international publication.
  • Teaching, course responsibility, supervision, and examination in courses at the basic and advanced levels in public administration. Teaching in doctoral education may also be relevant. Teaching in most programs and courses at the department may be considered. Responsibilities also include course and program development as well as participation in the department's pedagogical development work.
  • Collaboration with the surrounding community.
  • Active participation in the development of the department's activities in Gothenburg.

Eligibility

Eligibility for employment as a teacher is specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Employment Regulations for the employment of teachers at Gothenburg University (GU 2024/1687).

Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree in public administration or another relevant subject area where the administrative perspective is central, such as sociology, social work, political science, business administration, or has equivalent scientific competence.

Primarily, candidates who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence within five years prior to the application deadline for the position of assistant professor will be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Applicants must have demonstrated pedagogical skill and have experience in research and teaching relevant to the field of public administration and the current research project.
