What We Do and Want

Within Tyresö Municipality, Care for Persons with Disabilities, we work to provide support to relieve parents of children with special needs.

By becoming a support family, you can help children and young people have a better life.

About the Assignment

Support families take in a child or young person with a disability, which can be either physical or mental. It involves opening your home to the child or young person one or two weekends a month. Both single individuals and couples, with or without children, can become support families.

The reasons for needing an extra family vary; it may involve the child/young person needing a change of environment or the parents needing relief. The support is always voluntary, and parents have approached the municipality themselves to apply for extra support.

As a support family in Tyresö Municipality, you can expect:

• Clear content in the assignment.
• Guidance, support, and training assistance.
• Compensation and expense reimbursement according to the recommendations of Sweden's municipalities and regions.
• Help to start and conclude the assignment effectively.

Getting to know a person can sometimes happen quickly and sometimes take longer. It is important not to rush or have too high expectations. We create an individual plan to meet everyone's different needs. It is essential that there is mutual trust between the child, their parents, and you, so that the relationship feels secure.

Who Are You?

No special qualifications are required for the assignment, but a support family should:

• Have an interest in creating a lasting relationship with the child and family,
• Enjoy, respect, and have time to be together with other people,
• Be interested in how other people are doing,
• Have a secure and stable living situation,
• Be willing to make a commitment over a longer period,
• Have emotional and physical space to welcome a child into their home.

Being single or not having children living at home is not a hindrance. Since children have different needs and backgrounds, different families are needed. It is important that everyone in the family agrees on the assignment and that there is time for one more in the family.
