Collection Manager for the Crafts Collection

The position is a fixed-term employment for 6 months full-time (100%). Start date by agreement.

Nationalmuseum is a government authority and Sweden's museum of art and design with approximately 160 employees. The museum's collections consist of older paintings, sculptures, drawings, and graphics, as well as crafts and design from antiquity to the present day. Nationalmuseum is also responsible for portrait art up to the present day through the State Portrait Collection. The collections are displayed at Blasieholmen, Stockholm, and at around 20 other locations, including Läckö Castle, Jamtli, and Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum.

Nationalmuseum is looking for someone who wants to manage and develop the role of collection manager for the crafts collection, located at the Art Handling Unit.

As a collection manager, you will have a key role in the ongoing work of caring for, preserving, and displaying the museum's object collections. You will be part of a team with packers, exhibition technicians, and collection managers.

The Art Handling Unit is responsible for carrying out tasks such as collection management, object handling, and risk management according to principles of good collection management, as well as for load and mounting issues during the planning and construction of exhibitions. The unit is part of the Preservation and Photography department, which also includes responsibilities for conservation and photography.

Your main tasks:

  • Ensuring order in the storage and implementing measures according to principles of good collection management.
  • Ensuring traceability of art objects in storage through registration, ID photography, and inventory of objects in the collection database and in storage.
  • Participating in planning and taking part in exhibition work, handling loans and acquisitions, receiving and delivering art including logistics.
  • Contributing to the streamlining of workflows and the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly methods within the area of operations, as well as optimizing storage facilities.
  • Preparing documentation for expense calculations within your area and working within established budget frameworks.
  • Conducting environmental monitoring within your area of expertise and engaging in your own in-depth knowledge acquisition.

Requirements:

  • You have documented experience of at least 1 year in storage work at a museum or from another activity deemed equivalent.
  • You have experience with the object database MuseumPlus or have experience with other collection databases.
  • You are proficient in Swedish and/or English in both spoken and written form.

Meritorious:

  • You have a B driver's license (manual).
  • You have a forklift license.
  • You have experience in packing various types of objects.
  • You have expertise in art, cultural studies, or equivalent.
  • You have relevant higher education or other training deemed equivalent.

Your profile:

We expect you to have excellent organizational skills, be responsible, and be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with others. As a person, you are proactive, solution-oriented, attentive, used to being flexible, and able to prioritize given deadlines. You have good communication skills both in writing and verbally.

The tasks are physically demanding with daily heavy lifting. It is important to have good physical condition, an understanding of ergonomics, and to maintain continuous training to avoid injuries. Work in other locations may occur, which involves travel and overnight stays.
