About the Historical Museum

We are Sweden's historical and archaeological museum. Here you can get to know and understand the people who lived before us. Our vision is to unite people through time and space. The Historical Museum is led by the museum director and consists of two units: Hospitality and Learning. About 30 people work at the museum. The Historical Museum is part of the National Historical Museums, which is Sweden's largest state museum group with approximately 350 employees. The agency includes the Economic Museum, Hallwyl Museum, Historical Museum, Royal Armory, Skokloster Castle, Sweden's Museum of the Holocaust, and Tumba Bruksmuseum. The agency also includes the Archaeologists' assignment activities. The National Historical Museums are tasked with promoting knowledge and interest in Sweden's history and preserving and developing the cultural heritage managed by the agency.

The Learning Unit

The unit works to create a public offering around lifelong and enjoyable learning. The offerings aim to be engaging, spark curiosity about history, and reach new visitors/participants based on their circumstances. The unit plays an important role in the visitor's experience of the museum and focuses on the entire country when developing activities, both physically and digitally.

Eleven museum educators work in the unit, either full-time or part-time. About half of the positions are intensive in exhibitions. Additionally, there are about seven seasonal museum educators during the summer period.

Job Description

The position is an exhibition-intensive role, which means your main tasks will be to meet our visitors. As a museum educator at the Historical Museum, you will meet a broad audience in the museum's exhibitions, studio, and through the museum's digital channels such as social media. You will plan and conduct tours and activities for school groups in various grades, SFI students, specially booked groups, and general museum visitors of all ages. You will also work with program activities aimed at children and youth on weekends and school breaks. The position also includes practical work such as preparing and cleaning up after public activities in the museum's premises, conducting evaluations, and contributing to the development of the educational offerings in consultation with responsible functions.

We work based on the museum's operational goals and vision, always keeping the target groups in mind.

We are looking for you:

  • who is educated in relevant subjects such as archaeology, history, and pedagogy.
  • who has documented experience leading groups, preferably in a museum.
  • who can perform various educational activities for different types of groups based on people's varying needs.
  • who has a good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English; you are welcome to speak another language.
  • who is comfortable using digital solutions and creativity in your educational work.

The position is a permanent employment at 21%. The working hours are adapted to the operations, which means you will work one morning a week and every other weekend. The position also includes working at other times beyond this, for example during school breaks and, if necessary, in the evenings.
