Become a Standby Firefighter
As a firefighter, you receive comprehensive training, exciting tasks, and an unparalleled sense of community within your team.
Most importantly, you fulfill a vital societal function.
We have nine stations staffed by standby firefighters: Vindeln, Åmsele, Robertsfors, Ånäset, Botsmark, Sävar, Tavelsjö, Holmsund, and Hörnefors. The Umeå region's fire protection includes the municipalities of Umeå, Vindeln, and Robertsfors. As a standby firefighter, you usually have a regular job with another employer. When the alarm goes off, you respond from the station you belong to.
The assignments vary and can involve everything from fires and traffic accidents to providing first aid.
Are you our next firefighter?
We are looking for someone with great commitment who can be available for response during part of their time. Our rescue teams often face complex situations, and to ensure we have as broad a competence as possible, we seek individuals with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
Teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a natural inclination towards service-oriented and respectful interactions are some of the qualities we highly value and need in a group.
Readiness at Home and Work
The arrangement varies, but the foundation is that you have standby duty every third or fourth week. During that week, you respond when the alarm goes off, regardless of whether you are at home or at work. When an alarm sounds, you must be at the fire station in your locality within five minutes.
Most have standby duty around the clock, but other solutions are also possible. You also have training one evening per standby week.
How often do you respond to alarms?
A standby firefighter responds to alarms about 15 times a year and is typically away from work for an average of 30 minutes each time. The number of responses varies between different locations.
We Train You
You will receive the training and practice you need from us. First, a basic training at the station in Umeå, and within a two-year period, you will attend a training course run by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) in Sandö or Luleå. In total, this involves seven weeks.
You will regularly participate in internal training and exercises. Most training sessions are held at your local station during the evenings or on weekends. We cover a large part of the driving training for a C license (heavy vehicle) if you do not already have it.
You will receive a salary from us during all training and exercises.
There is an opportunity to start working before the entire training is completed.
Employment and Compensation
You will be employed according to the RiB 22 agreement. You will receive a fixed compensation per standby week. In addition, you will receive hourly compensation for responses and training. We also pay a salary during the time you are training.
The employment rate varies significantly depending on which station you work at and how many alarms are sounded.
What is Required to Apply?
There are several requirements you need to meet to be considered for the firefighter position and be called for an interview.
- You must be at least 18 years old and have a B driver's license.
- You should live or work close to the fire station in your locality.
- Usually, the team must leave the station no later than 5 minutes after the alarm has sounded.
- You need permission from your regular employer to leave the workplace during alarms and training.
