FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence and our mission is to conduct research, method and technology development, as well as investigations for total defence and in support of disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our activities are carried out on behalf of, primarily, the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have approximately 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.
Do you want to work on exciting projects with technology for defence and security? Can you analyze complex systems and understand the essential? Do you understand the connection between today’s technological developments and future applications? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the position
As a software developer, you will work on developing models and tools for the evaluation of guided weapons. The models are implemented in C++ and other high-level languages and integrated with other models. These are used in studies, analysis, and evaluation. You need to understand the physics behind the models and how to translate that into efficient and robust software. Development is a team effort that involves many different fields of knowledge and expertise.
About the unit
You will be part of the Guided Weapons unit, which belongs to the Defence Technology department in Kista. Please read more about what we do: https://foi.se/om-foi/organisation/forsvarsteknik.html (https://foi.se/om-foi/organisation/forsvarsteknik.html).
In the unit, we research, among other things, guidance, navigation, and vehicle dynamics. We work with studies, analyses, and evaluations, primarily of weapon systems. The applications range from modeling and simulation of hypersonic weapons to the development of alternative navigation methods. The unit's work aims both to analyze the performance and capabilities of today’s systems and to develop and evaluate new concepts for future defence.
Do you have the competence profile we need?
We are looking for someone with:
- a completed Master’s degree in engineering (or soon to be completed) or equivalent and an interest in aerospace engineering, systems theory, control engineering, or applied mathematics
- solid experience in C++
- the ability to work effortlessly in the borderland between physical modeling and software system development
- good ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both speech and writing, in Swedish as well as in English.
We are looking for a person who enjoys working both independently and in a team, and who has good collaboration skills. We appreciate initiative and goal-oriented results. Furthermore, you have a good analytical ability and find it easy to translate theory into practice as well as to put problems into context. You have developed the ability to quickly acquire new information and rapidly familiarize yourself with new areas. We place great importance on your personal qualities.
It is an advantage if you have:
- work experience in software development in C++
- practical and theoretical experience in navigation and control systems, trajectory planning, simulation of flying vehicles, and software development in object-oriented programming languages
- experience in weapon-related issues from, for example, the Armed Forces, FMV, or the defence industry.
