PhD Candidate in Computerized Image Processing with a Focus on Tissue Sample Analysis
Project Description
Within the project, the successful candidate will conduct fundamental research and method development to design and implement new computational models and solutions.
A solid theoretical background and practical experience in digital image processing and deep learning are important. A successful candidate should also have a strong interest in collaborating with researchers in the life sciences and learning more about pathology and tissue analysis.
The project is funded by a grant from the Swedish Research Council.
Job Responsibilities
The PhD candidate will primarily focus on their own doctoral education. Other duties at the department, including teaching and administrative work, may be included within the scope of the employment (max 20%).
Qualification Requirements
Eligibility for doctoral education is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance. Basic eligibility is met by those who:
- have obtained a degree at an advanced level in computer science, engineering, data analysis, applied mathematics, machine learning, or another related field; or
- have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
- have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
The university may grant exceptions from the requirement for basic eligibility for an individual applicant if there are special reasons. (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). For specific eligibility, see the syllabus for the subject.

We are looking for candidates with:
- A solid understanding of computations and analysis, along with a strong academic background;
- A strong interest in thoroughly understanding the nature of existing methods and systems, both theoretically and practically;
- Proficiency in programming in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow;
- Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English;
- Creativity, attention to detail, and a structured approach to problem-solving;
- Good collaboration skills, drive, and independence.
Desirable/meritorious
Experience working with digital images, and more specifically microscopy images and life science data, is meritorious.

For contributions to joint publications, include a list in the CV with links to publications online and attach the publication where the applicant made the largest contribution as an additional writing sample.
- Contact information (name, email addresses, and phone numbers) for at least two references, indicating the context, duration, and nature of the relationship to the candidate. Reference letters may be attached as supporting documents but are not a requirement at the time of application.

About the Employment
The employment is temporary, according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7. The extent is full-time. Start date September 1, 2025, or by agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala.
