Research Position in Chemistry with a Focus on Analytical Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and organic chemistry.
Over 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world, and English is the primary working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Center in Uppsala, where there are good opportunities for collaboration with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine, and SciLifeLab, as well as access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies.

Natural water systems contain extremely complex mixtures of organic compounds. Compounds representing dissolved organic matter (DOM) are not commercially available and are difficult to synthesize. Organic chemistry plays an important role in environmental research by helping to fill these gaps in the availability of compounds. This enables a deeper exploration of natural mixtures using pure standards. The results from the ongoing work within the research group will be used to better understand how Earth's ecosystems process carbon compounds and to assess how changing soil conditions affect the transport of carbon compounds from land to sea.
Job Responsibilities
The researcher will be responsible for synthesizing organic compounds rich in carboxylic acid groups, assessing their purity using NMR, and conducting high-resolution LC-MS/MS analysis to determine fragmentation patterns for comparison with natural mixtures.
Qualifications
Experience in standard synthesis, interpretation of NMR spectra, and LC-MS/MS fragmentation spectra to assess purity and composition of synthesized compounds is required, as well as experience in the synthesis of carbocyclic compounds.
Desirable/meritorious
Experience handling liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry instruments and working in a research laboratory for at least one year after obtaining a PhD is an advantage.
About the Position
The position is temporary, lasting 12 months. The scope is full-time. Start date is May 1 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
