Coast Guard is looking for a Commander

The Coast Guard is a civil state preparedness authority responsible for maritime surveillance and environmental rescue services at sea on behalf of the government and parliament. During preparedness for environmental rescue, we work preventively with environmental monitoring while promoting a sustainable marine environment. We also conduct supervision and control of fishing, customs, border, hunting, and nature conservation at sea. In addition, we work to increase safety through maritime traffic monitoring and maintain constant readiness for search and rescue operations. Around the clock, all year round, we are present along Sweden's coast, where we protect lives and the environment, now and for the future.

Description

The Coast Guard is looking for a commander based at the coastal station in Lysekil.

Responsibilities

In addition to the duties of a coastal surveillance officer, your main responsibilities as a commander will include:

  • leading and distributing work on board
  • planning, prioritizing, and following up on daily operations on board
  • documenting and reporting in KIBS
  • responsible for the operation and supervision of the vessel
  • participating in operational planning and follow-up
  • leading operations, search and rescue missions
  • ensuring compliance with regulations regarding the Coast Guard's maritime safety work
  • responsible for position training for the staff
  • ultimately responsible for the vessel's and crew's safety according to maritime law regulations
  • responsible for safety training for the staff

Qualifications

You have a very good ability to lead and develop both staff and operations. You inspire confidence, delegate tasks, and have the ability to motivate employees to perform well. By being engaged, driven, and communicative, you create a positive and developing work environment. You enjoy working independently as well as collaboratively with others. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

The position requires that you have basic qualifications as well as nautical qualifications in class ND, in accordance with the guidelines for KBV shipping regarding staffing, qualifications, and training for the safe operation of the Coast Guard's vessels (dnr 2018-3130).

The position also requires that you, according to the aforementioned guidelines, have the following competencies:

  • medical certificate, 12.1
  • basic safety training, 12.2.1
  • Medical Care training, 12.3.1
  • general radio operator (GOC), 12.4.2
  • ECDIS training, 12.8

Furthermore, the position requires that you, according to the previously mentioned guidelines, have or will obtain the following competencies:

  • advanced firefighting training, 12.5.1
  • oil spill handling training, 12.7.1
  • food hygiene training, 12.12
  • leadership and work environment training, 12.13-14
  • general DIP training, 12.15.1
  • basic training in dynamic positioning (DP-Basic), 12.16

Conditions

The position is a temporary appointment starting from 2025-10-01, but no later than 2026-04-30, with a possibility of extension.

Swedish citizenship, a driver's license for passenger cars, a drug test, and a security clearance according to the Security Protection Act are required for employment.

The Coast Guard participates in overseas missions and international operations. Therefore, the employment includes an obligation to serve abroad when required for the operation.
