We are seeking a PhD candidate in evolutionary genetics interested in contributing to a better understanding of the mechanisms that shape mutation frequencies.

Your Responsibilities

Germline mutations are the source of all genetic variation and the mechanism that creates the conditions for evolutionary change. They also affect a range of evolutionary phenomena, such as mutation load, extinction risk, and inbreeding depression, and contribute to various diseases. Understanding the factors that shape mutation frequency in the germline has long been a central goal in evolutionary biology, yet our understanding of these factors remains limited.

Mutations also occur in somatic cells. Although these are not inherited between generations, they are the leading cause of cancer and have been suggested to contribute to aging. The factors that govern somatic mutation frequency are even less explored than those affecting germline mutation frequency, and virtually nothing is known about a potential link between germline and somatic mutation frequencies.

By using the model system Drosophila melanogaster, combined with quantitative genetics, experimental evolution, and direct manipulation of resource allocation patterns, this project aims to investigate what influences mutation frequency in germ cells and in somatic cells from a life history perspective. The work involves accumulating mutations in different fly lines, extracting DNA, creating sequencing libraries, and performing bioinformatic analyses of sequence data.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.

Your Qualifications

You have a master's degree in biology, bioinformatics, or genetics, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the advanced level in one of these subjects. Alternatively, you have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

Applicants should have a strong interest in evolutionary genetics, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Very good written and oral communication skills in English are also required.

Applicants are expected to have experience in processing and analyzing genomic sequencing data and possess good knowledge of statistical analysis. Previous experience working with Drosophila melanogaster or other insect systems, DNA extraction, and library preparation is advantageous but not required.

Your Workplace

You will work at the Department of Biology, which is part of the Institute of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at Linköping University. The Department of Biology has a broad research profile encompassing both fundamental and applied research, with research groups specializing in conservation biology, cell and microbiology, animal welfare, ecological modeling, ethology, evolution, genetics, and zoology.

The department is responsible for a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including bachelor's programs in biology and animal psychology, international master's programs in applied ethology and animal biology, as well as ecology and sustainable development. The department also offers several standalone biology courses, a natural science foundation year, and courses within the industrial economics program focusing on biological resources and sustainable use.

About the Employment

The position is temporary for four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years can occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special circumstances, further extension may be possible.

Start date is negotiable.
