We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling the challenges of our time. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and innovating, we create a better future together, through both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!

Knowledgeable and engaged employees with good conditions are one of the most important success factors for Linköping University. Teachers and researchers are our core competence, but a successful university needs experienced and motivated staff in many areas. Every role is important. We have a significant recruitment need, partly due to an expanding research operation. You are needed here.

The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) is one of the largest departments at the university, primarily operating within the Faculty of Medicine. Our goal is to conduct education and research in medicine and biomedicine, with high international quality.

At BKV, you will find leading research with both depth and breadth across a wide spectrum of modern biomedicine. Read more here: BKV (BKV).

We are now seeking a PhD candidate in Medical Science.

Your Responsibilities

Your task as a PhD candidate will be to conduct world-class research in protein biology as part of the project "Proteomic characterisation of oncogenic forkhead box transcription factors in cancer" under the supervision of Associate Professor Stefan Koch (see here for an overview of our work in this area). In this project, we aim to explore how forkhead box proteins contribute to the development and progression of cancer and to identify proteins for the development of new cancer treatments.

You will discover proteins that interact with forkhead box proteins using state-of-the-art proteomics (proximity proteomics) and collaborate with the national research infrastructure SciLifeLab to develop and test proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) against forkhead box proteins and their interactors (see SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se/units/hit2lead/)). In addition to these tasks, you are expected to present your work at local seminars and international conferences and contribute to shared tasks in the laboratory.

As a PhD candidate, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.

Your Qualifications

You have completed a master's degree in cell biology (or a related field such as molecular oncology or biomedicine), or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in cell biology, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

You should have practical experience with common molecular biology techniques and cell culture. Additional project-related skills, such as mass spectrometry-based proteomics and data analysis in R or Python, are advantageous for this position.

The working language in the laboratory is English, so the position requires excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Qualified candidates are expected to be:

  • Self-motivated and able to independently carry out research activities
  • Curious and interested in science beyond their own project
  • A diligent researcher who keeps organized records of their work

Please include a statement of purpose in your application indicating why you want to pursue a PhD and why you believe you are qualified for this position.

Your Workplace

You will work in the laboratory of Stefan Koch within the Department of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV) and the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Linköping University. The Department of Molecular Medicine and Virology conducts research as well as undergraduate and doctoral education in molecular biology related to human pathology.

About the Employment

Upon commencement of employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Your employment as a PhD candidate will be processed in conjunction with your admission to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is temporary for four years full-time. Initially, you will be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may be granted.

Start date according to agreement.

Salary and Benefits

The PhD salary is regulated according to a locally agreed salary scale. Read more about employee benefits here.
