Postdoctoral Researcher in Materials Science

We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being courageous, thinking freely, and innovating, we together create a better future with both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!

Your Responsibilities

The project for which we are now seeking new staff involves fundamental research in materials science, primarily theory and modeling of materials that are laminated at the atomic level. We will use open databases and large-scale simulations to systematically search for and investigate a large number of 2D and 3D materials, their synthesizability, and properties. To achieve this, we will both use and construct databases and systematically evaluate the thermodynamic aspects of synthesis and to what extent we can tailor properties. The project will include machine learning and will be conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

We have extensive experience in the development of inorganic materials (both 2D and 3D materials), and we regularly publish in reputable journals. We now intend to explore new 2D and 3D materials for sustainable applications, e.g., for catalysis, energy storage, and water purification. Your tasks will consist of simulations, primarily based on DFT, to evaluate stability, structure, composition, and properties. You will also generate data for studies based on ML. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with experimentalists.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily conduct research. Teaching may also be included in the tasks, but at most one-fifth of the working time.

Your Qualifications

To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have obtained a PhD or have a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD. Your degree must be obtained no later than at the time the employment decision is made.

It is advantageous if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, it may be considered for those who obtained their PhD earlier, for example, due to various types of statutory leaves.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, or equivalent related to the field of materials science. A PhD in Computer Science or equivalent with additional documented education related to materials science at the undergraduate or doctoral level also qualifies. A requirement for the position is solid previous experience in theoretical modeling of materials, or in the use of ML for material studies. Very good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is also a requirement.

You are engaged and positive, and enjoy working collaboratively with other researchers in a team. You are efficient and goal-oriented.

Your Workplace

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) is characterized by internationally leading expertise in materials science (materials physics and materials chemistry), including theory, modeling, synthesis, and characterization. Examples of strong areas include the synthesis of thin films, nanoparticles, 2D-1D, and mesoporous materials, which are characterized in our state-of-the-art labs regarding structure and composition, down to the atomic level, through diffraction, spectroscopy, and advanced microscopy. IFM currently has about 400 employees divided into more than 10 departments.

You will work in the Department of Material Design, which conducts research and doctoral education in the field of Materials Science. The department is divided into three units: Material Theory, Applied Electrochemistry, and Thin Films and Nanolaminated Materials. It is within the Material Theory unit that this postdoctoral position will be active, but in close collaboration with experimentalists and the Department of Computer Science.

About the Employment

The position is a fixed-term employment for two years with the possibility of extension for a total employment period of no more than three years. The postdoctoral position is full-time.

Start date by agreement.
