The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focus on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for doctoral education in the field of Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology, and educational science. Additionally, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, bioinformatics, chemistry, organic chemistry, and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as the pharmacy program. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, contributing strongly to Gothenburg University's top ranking in life sciences. The department's activities are conducted in Natrium, Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.
As a research engineer, you will be part of the technical group that is part of the operational support at the department. The purpose of the operational support is to support and be a competence resource for the department's research and education in a broad sense. This means that as a research engineer, you need to have a good understanding of the conditions and driving forces of education, research, and collaboration, while also ensuring that more subject-specific knowledge and competence within the department's various areas of activity are secured. The current technical group consists of 8 people under the leadership of the technical manager and includes competencies in everything from IT, chemical handling, laboratory safety, research instrumentation, purchasing, and work environment.
Job Responsibilities
The position primarily involves:
- Planning and organizing laboratory resources and materials in collaboration with operational managers. This also involves risk analysis concerning chemical, physical, and/or biological health risks, and general laboratory safety.
- Responsible for and maintaining measurement and analysis equipment in the teaching laboratory (for example, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chemical analysis instruments, etc.)
- Quality assurance and documentation of laboratory routines, as well as ensuring that employees and students follow required routines and safety regulations.
The position may also include participation:
- In teaching both in undergraduate education and in internal training of staff.
- Preparing materials for courses.
Qualifications
Requirements for the position are:
- You must have one of the following degrees: a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a master's degree in chemistry, or a PhD in chemistry, or a teaching degree in chemistry.
- You should have documented experience as a laboratory assistant in teaching chemistry in course activities at the university level within the last 5 years.
- Personal qualities such as good initiative, good collaboration skills, good organizational skills, and good social and communication skills are important as the position involves many student meetings.
- Fluent in Swedish and good knowledge of written language.
- Good knowledge of English in both spoken and written form.
Meritorious for the position are:
- Experience with the chemical handling system KLARA.
- Experience with the purchasing system Proceedo.
- Experience with the teaching platform Canvas.
Employment
The employment is a full-time temporary position for one year at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at Gothenburg University. Start in August 2025 or by agreement.
