Only a few similar organizations exist in Europe. With access to unique infrastructure and a broad scientific competence area that has a clear connection to societal needs and challenges, the Department's activities contribute to new solutions to global challenges concerning the ocean.

The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and collaboration related to the ocean and its resources. The activities are conducted in Gothenburg, at the research stations Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation, Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, and on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary breadth that includes marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, with research spanning geographically from coast to open ocean. Our researchers and students often play prominent roles in international expeditions in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the major oceans, but also work in the Swedish coastal zone and in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analytical methods. The department also has a wide educational palette with a bachelor's program, three master's programs, and a doctoral program in the marine field.

Subject Description

Large coastal fish have dramatically decreased in many marine areas. In Swedish waters, cod, coalfish, and other ecological key species are virtually gone. Within the project Ecosystem-Based Fish Management in the 8-Fjord Area (https://www.8fjordar.se/ (https://www.8fjordar.se/)) on the Swedish west coast, restoration efforts are underway to bring back coastal stocks of cod and other fish species. Genetic studies with a limited number of markers show that cod recruitment occurs from at least two different populations - offshore cod (including cod from the North Sea) and coastal cod. For the coastal cod found in the fjords of Bohuslän, there is still uncertainty about where the juveniles originate, whether it is local spawning or if juveniles are transported from southern Kattegat and Öresund. This is a question that needs to be clarified in order to provide relevant advice on restoration efforts.
