Job Advertisement: Engineer in Radar Signatures
FOI, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense and in support of disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our operations are primarily commissioned by the Government Offices, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have around 1400 employees, of which more than 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.
Would you like to be part of an experimental-oriented organization that utilizes and further develops the latest technology? The Signatures unit is looking for new employees who want to be involved in the various stages of the development process, from idea and system development to practical field trials and data analysis.
About the Position
An object's radar signature indicates how the object appears to a radar system. An example is how a drone scatters incoming radar waves towards a radar sensor, which can determine whether the drone is detected. We now need to expand our group that performs measurements of radar signatures and antenna characteristics.
With us, you will use your knowledge in areas such as instrument control to build and utilize measurement systems within the radar field. Your tasks will also include experimental planning, execution, and some measurement data analysis, collaboration with partners, and workplace safety efforts. Occasionally, you will work on measurement method development, testing in laboratories at FOI, constructing measurement setups, and maintaining and developing measurement systems.
Examples of Tasks:
- Develop instrument control for data collection.
- Plan and conduct measurements together with colleagues, the Armed Forces, and/or FMV.
- Signal processing and analysis of measurement data.
- Perform practical preparations for tests.
About the Unit
FOI has four locations: Stockholm, Umeå, Grindsjön, and Linköping. You will be part of the Signatures unit, which belongs to the Electronic Warfare department. The unit's activities focus on applied research, technology development, and expert support in the signature area.
Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?
We are looking for someone with an engineering or master's degree in technical physics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, or another field that FOI considers equivalent.
Through education or work experience, you have experience in instrument control within testing or measurement activities. You have practical skills and can work on both measurement equipment and measurement objects. Additionally, you have:
- Experience in writing software for instrument control.
- Driver's license (B)
It is advantageous if you have:
- Knowledge of programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++.
- Knowledge of how networks and remote control solutions work and can be set up.
- Work experience that includes instrument control.
- Experience in radar target or antenna measurements.
- Knowledge of microwave technology.
- Experience with real-time systems.
As a person, you need to be self-driven, proactive, with good collaboration and problem-solving skills. In addition to your technical and scientific knowledge, you need to have very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.
We place great importance on your personal qualities.
What Do We Offer You?
FOI offers a unique workplace where you can work on what is important for both total defense and society as a whole. FOI is a government agency under the Ministry of Defence and is one of Europe's leading research institutes in defense and security.
The position is a permanent employment that may start with a six-month probationary period.
We consciously work for a good working environment with a good balance between work and private life. In addition, we offer a range of benefits. Read more about what it is like to work with us: https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html (https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html)
