Teaching Assistant at Berzelius School's Adapted Upper Secondary School
Do you want to help start a new class? Are you unpretentious and flexible? Do you have experience working with students who have diagnoses within the autism spectrum? With us, as a teaching assistant, you can make a significant difference and contribute to more students having a good school experience. Welcome to us!
Your Responsibilities
The position of teaching assistant in the individual program at Berzelius School's adapted upper secondary school means being a support and resource for students who have an intellectual disability and often other additional diagnoses within autism, vision, hearing, physical disabilities, etc. You will be present as support throughout the school day, from meeting students arriving by taxi in the morning, assisting with practical challenges that arise during the day, toilet visits, lunch, during lessons to clarify the teacher's instructions, and being an extra adult who can support in schoolwork as well as ensuring that the student gets their taxi at the end of the school day. In the classroom, there is often one teacher and several teaching assistants supporting the students and each other. In the fall of 2025, we will have more students and will start a new class.
As a Teaching Assistant
you are responsible for contributing to the realization of the curriculum's goals and intentions in the operation. Together with the work team, you plan, implement, and document the pedagogical work in the class. You need to be flexible in your role and adapt your approach according to what the situation requires and have a sense of how to meet the student/student group based on the students' individual circumstances on that day.
Working Hours
are Monday to Friday, and you need to be able to start the day at 07:30.
Your Workplace
Berzelius School is centrally located in Linköping in the Vasastaden district, which is within walking distance from the Travel Center. About 90 students attend the adapted upper secondary school in the programs offered: the individual program and two different national programs. There are about 5-8 students in each class.
At Berzelius School, we aim to stimulate social community and develop abilities to learn new things both independently and together with others and to use their knowledge. Here, teaching assistants and teachers work together during the school day to provide students with a safe and developing school day at "Berzan".
We focus on staff development and offer courses in TSS (sign language support). We also take time for reflection and how we can together develop the operation to become even better.
You Who Apply
You who apply have completed education in the child and youth program from high school or adult education. Alternatively, you have a degree from a high school or adult education in health and care. It is an advantage if you have a degree from the child and youth program with relevant orientation.
You have experience working as a teaching assistant in adapted schools or other curriculum-driven activities, or you have other experience that the employer deems equivalent. It is advantageous if you have experience working with AAC (alternative and augmentative communication) such as sign language support, visual support, and digital communication aids, such as eye pointers. If you have experience working with students who have intellectual disabilities, students with diagnoses within the autism spectrum, and students who may exhibit challenging behavior, we also see this as advantageous.
You have good communication skills in spoken and written Swedish. This is necessary so that you, according to the curriculum GySär-13, can organize and implement the work so that the student receives support in their language and communication development and achieves as far as possible.
In your role as a teaching assistant, you are aware of the goals and quality standards for the operation. You have a good understanding of people's differences and relate to them in a sensitive and flexible manner in teaching and the school's daily life. You create good relationships and collaborate well with the contacts that occur in your professional role. You lead the work with the students through motivation, engagement, and participation. You also contribute to the students' learning by bringing enthusiasm, energy, and joy to the work.
To thrive in the position, you need to be unpretentious, have a low-arousal approach, and be able to remain calm even when unexpected situations arise. You need to be independent and flexible to adapt the day to the student and what may arise during a day. You have an easy time taking a holistic perspective.
In this recruitment process, we use tests in the selection.
