Department Head at the Geriatric Clinic

We offer you a position as Department Head at the Geriatric Clinic with many points of contact where you will face various types of problem-solving.

The role involves shared leadership where you, together with a colleague, will be responsible for the staff on ward 32. The operation provides geriatric care, and the majority of patients fall under the category of the most fragile elderly. At the Geriatric Clinic, team-based work is applied with the patient at the center, focusing on the importance of collaboration and utilizing each other's professional roles and competencies. You will play an important role in stimulating ongoing development.

The department is engaged in development work around BPSD (behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia) which means ensuring the quality of care and developing care for individuals with cognitive disorders/dementia.

As Department Head, you are responsible for the work environment of the department and are expected to lead, plan, and develop the operation. You report to the Operations Manager, are part of the management team, and have close collaboration with the other four department heads within the clinic. The role includes personnel responsibility for approximately 25 employees consisting of nurses and nursing assistants.

About You

We are looking for someone with a degree from a university or college with a focus on health and medical care or another relevant field as assessed by the employer. You have several years of experience in your profession, and we would like you to have a genuine interest in geriatrics and knowledge in the field. Leadership experience or participation in Region Kalmar County's leadership academy is desirable.

It is important that you recognize the strengths of shared leadership and the significance of interacting with one another. As a leader, you are present, straightforward, and clear. You are skilled at collaborating and building good relationships and ensure that competence, engagement, and participation are utilized among employees. Furthermore, you are responsible and plan your work in a structured manner, placing great emphasis on operational understanding, patient focus, and promoting development. You are humble, attentive, and have a good ability to make decisions and address unresolved issues. Personal suitability will be given significant weight.

Your Future Workplace

The Geriatric Clinic handles patients in inpatient care and outpatient services. The most fragile elderly patients in need of inpatient care are prioritized. The majority of patients are admitted via the emergency department or acute care unit, a smaller portion is admitted directly from home, and some are transferred from other clinics' inpatient wards. All admissions and registrations are managed by our own geriatric advisory team (GeRt) to ensure the right patient is placed in the right location. The clinic has a geriatric ward with 14-21 beds and a department for specialized palliative care with 10 beds. The Geriatric Clinic is a clinical training ward where medical and nursing students, with support, manage a ward with 4 patients for 2 weeks.

We strive to work with person-centered care where the patient is always the focus. This also means involving and adapting to the individual's needs, resources, and conditions. The starting point in person-centered care is the patient's narrative about their illness, sometimes with the help of relatives. Based on the history, a joint care plan is made with goals and strategies during the care period. Participation is a fundamental aspect of person-centered care and means, among other things, that there is room for the patient to express questions and any concerns. We work with the patient at the center.

Kalmar County Hospital is one of three hospitals in Kalmar County. The hospital is an emergency hospital with specialized care, maternity care, and postnatal care.
