PhD Positions at the Department of Mathematics, Stockholm University
The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University has a prominent place in Scandinavian mathematics with its long tradition of excellent research.
The department consists of three divisions: mathematics, mathematical statistics, and computational mathematics. Researchers working in the mathematics division have expertise spanning many different branches of mathematics, from algebra, geometry, and analysis to mathematical logic.

Project Description
We are specifically looking for PhD candidates for the following projects:
- Topics in algebraic topology (supervised by Alexander Berglund)
- Arithmetic geometry: Moduli spaces, Galois representations and tautological rings (supervised by Jonas Bergström)
- Topics in Diophantine analysis (supervised by Matthew de Courcy-Ireland)
- Group theory, arithmetic geometry and representation theory (supervised by Wushi Goldring)
- Analysis and geometry: Crystalline structures (supervised by Pavel Kurasov)
- Topology of moduli spaces (supervised by Dan Petersen)
- Geometric analysis with applications to general relativity (supervised by Oliver Petersen)

Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to the doctoral program, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application date.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at the advanced level, or have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
For specific eligibility, according to the general study plan for doctoral education in mathematics, the applicant must have passed courses totaling at least 90 hp in mathematics. This must always include the courses Abstract Algebra (7.5 hp), Foundations of Analysis (7.5 hp), Complex Analysis (7.5 hp), and an independent project at the advanced level of at least 15 hp. Specific eligibility is also granted to those who have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include: the applicant's documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area, ability to express themselves in spoken and written English, ability for analytical thinking, creativity, initiative, independence, and ability to collaborate. Previous studies and grades, the quality of independent work, references, relevant experience, the applicant's written motivation for the application, and for selected applicants, interviews will be used as the basis for the assessment. Note that applicants may be called for an interview on short notice. Interviews are planned to take place in mid-May.

About the Position
We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD student, you will primarily focus on your own doctoral education, but the position may include limited work in teaching, research, and administration (maximum 20%).
A new appointment as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the appointment is renewed thereafter for a maximum of two years at a time.
