We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher in immersive visualization, placed at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping.

Subject Area

For a description of the subject area, see the full advertisement on "Lediga jobb - Linköpings universitet" (Vacancies - Linköping University).

Your Responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher, your primary task will be to conduct research. Some teaching may be included in the position, but no more than 20% of working hours.

The overarching goal of the position is to investigate how astrovisualization can support both advanced scientific analysis and the public's understanding of astronomy. OpenSpace is particularly well-suited for this, as it enables work with real scientific datasets while simultaneously allowing the same material to be transformed into interactive public presentations. This creates opportunities for mutual knowledge exchange between astronomers, visualization researchers, educators, and the public: scientific questions and datasets contribute to popular science communication, while public audiences highlight new requirements for visualization design, storytelling, interaction, and explanatory models.

The position will focus on developing a research direction around OpenSpace as a platform for astrovisualization and public interaction. This involves identifying publishable research questions based on existing and ongoing OpenSpace work, conducting user studies with astronomers and educators, and producing scientific publications within the fields of interactive astronomical visualization, immersive data presentation, and the role of planetariums and science centers in science communication. The work will utilize the dome theater at Visualization Center C as a central environment for experimentation and dissemination, while leveraging the broader OpenSpace network of international collaboration partners, planetariums, and scientific institutions.

Your Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a doctoral degree or hold a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. The degree must be completed no later than the time the decision on employment is made.

It is meritorious if your doctoral degree is not older than three years at the end of the application period. If there are special reasons for an older degree – such as statutory leave – this may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong research background in visualization, scientific data processing, astronomical visualization, or a related field. The applicant should have documented experience in scientific publishing and the ability to formulate, conduct, and communicate independent research in data visualization and its application to complex scientific data. Experience in uncertainty visualization, topological data analysis, machine learning, or other computational methods for analyzing and interpreting large, contextualized scientific datasets is particularly meritorious.

The position requires an interest in interdisciplinary research and the ability to collaborate with domain experts, such as astronomers, visualization researchers, computer scientists, educators, and professionals in public engagement. Since the project aims to connect research-driven astrovisualization with public dissemination, it is particularly meritorious if the candidate has experience working across disciplinary boundaries and translating scientific or technical results into formats usable by both experts and a broader public.

Experience in astrophysics, astronomy, planetary science, climate science, or other data-intensive scientific fields is meritorious. Previous experience with immersive visualization environments, interactive visualization systems, planetariums, science centers, or public engagement activities is also meritorious. The candidate should have a good ability to work in an international research environment and contribute to both peer-reviewed publications and the broader development of astrovisualization as a research field linked to OpenSpace.

The applicant must have very good command of English, including the ability to write scientific articles, present research results, and communicate effectively in international and interdisciplinary contexts.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Your Workplace

You will work at the Immersive Visualization Unit, at the Department of Science and Technology located at Campus Norrköping. The office environment is shared between Linköping University and Visualization Center C.

The position is a fixed-term appointment for two years, with the possibility of extension for a total employment period of up to three years. The postdoctoral position is full-time.
