At the Environment Unit, we are a team of 12 colleagues working in pleasant premises and surroundings in the Visborg area of Visby. As a colleague here, you will also have the opportunity to work flexibly. The unit boasts broad expertise in environmental and public health matters, and we foster a culture of mutual support.

The Environment Unit is part of the Building Permits and Environment Department. The department employs approximately 80 staff members, including environmental protection inspectors, food safety inspectors, and building permit case handlers.

Environmental supervision involves verifying that businesses comply with environmental legislation, as well as engaging in dialogue to drive improvements. At the Environment Unit, we conduct inspections at industrial sites, farms, wastewater treatment plants, waste facilities, and contaminated sites. We also handle referrals and inquiries related to environmentally hazardous operations. We work independently on our own cases while maintaining close collaboration among colleagues.

Your responsibilities

We are looking for someone who wants to work with supervision in the waste sector. This includes inspecting businesses that handle waste, excavated soil, and landfills, as well as processing cases related to littering and illegal burning. You will also support colleagues with expertise in waste management, provide opinions on building permit applications and detailed development plans, and liaise with the rescue services regarding spill management during emergencies.

There are close links between contaminated sites and the waste sector, particularly regarding the handling of excavated soil and landfills. The unit has colleagues with strong expertise in contaminated sites, with whom you will collaborate closely.

Who are you?

You must have a university degree in environmental and public health science, environmental studies, or equivalent education related to the Swedish Environmental Code.

A valid B-category driver’s license is required.

Experience working with environmental issues in the public sector or industry/business is advantageous. Experience with supervision under the Environmental Code or work within the waste sector is highly desirable.

We place great emphasis on your personal qualities. You are a strong team player who contributes positively to the group, while also being structured and capable of working independently in your regulatory duties. You communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. You remain calm and pedagogical when interacting with business operators and can easily navigate perspectives from the public, businesses, and legislation. As a public authority official, you are service-oriented yet able to make objective assessments, be clear, and set requirements where necessary.

Selection for interviews may take place on an ongoing basis.
