Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.
Your Team
You will join the Scientific Data group within the technical division – an international team responsible for the entire chain from data collection using state-of-the-art detector systems to the development and support of software projects for data analysis and visualization at the beamline experimental stations.
The detectors used for data collection at our beamlines are a central part of MAX IV's scientific infrastructure and require specialized and dedicated support. In this area, we are now looking for a Detector Software Engineer to work with the integration, commissioning, and operational support of detector systems, as well as the further development and maintenance of associated DAQ (Data Acquisition) software.
The main task for the successful candidate is to ensure optimal operation of commercially available detectors, both position-sensitive and energy-resolving, with a particular focus on megapixel-based photon-counting detectors and sCMOS cameras. The work involves handling high data rates and large data volumes using modern software frameworks and computing infrastructure, integrated into high-performance and sustainable services. You will work closely with researchers at the beamlines to understand their needs for detector systems and ensure the best possible detector performance for various experimental techniques. The role also includes contributing to the overarching software ecosystem for data acquisition within MAX IV's edge cloud environment. There is also an opportunity to establish collaborations with other research institutes developing detectors to implement customized solutions for MAX IV's beamlines when needed.
We actively encourage participation in international conferences and workshops through publications and presentations.
Main Responsibilities
- Integrate detectors into control and DAQ systems (Data Acquisition) and provide operational support for these systems by combining an understanding of the fundamental operating principles of detectors with the ability to deliver robust software solutions for scientific applications.
- Contribute to the development of the underlying general DAQ system.
- Understand the beamlines' needs for detectors and provide advice on the procurement of detector systems.
- Collaborate with commercial and non-commercial detector suppliers, troubleshoot new and existing detectors, and follow up on corrections, updates, and improvements with suppliers.
- Conduct Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and other performance and characterization tests of various types of detectors, such as photon-counting, charge-integrating, and energy-resolving detectors.
- Produce and maintain documentation for support, operation, and management of installed detector systems.
Qualifications
- Degree in physics, engineering, computer science, or equivalent education, experience, or competence.
- Experience working with detectors for scientific applications (preferably photon detectors) and understanding of their operating principles.
- Documented experience in software development and data analysis in a high-level language (e.g., Python, C++, or Rust) in a Linux environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels, both within and outside MAX IV.
- Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Meritorious Experience
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field.
- Experience with commercial X-ray detector systems typically used at synchrotron beamlines.
- Experience in developing detectors for synchrotron applications.
- Experience with high-performance and/or distributed data processing and network technology.
- Experience analyzing data in HDF5 format.
- Work experience from synchrotron facilities or other large-scale experimental research facilities.
- Knowledge of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).
- Experience with container technology and Kubernetes for deploying software and services.
- Experience working with FPGAs using HLS (e.g., Vivado) and/or OpenCL.
- Experience with Timepix3 ASIC.
Personal Attributes
- Good communication skills and ease in collaborating with colleagues at all levels, both within and outside the organization.
- Self-motivated with a strong interest in learning new technologies.
- Take initiative and drive problem-solving forward.
- Creative, flexible, and results-oriented.
- Enjoy collaborating and working together with others in interdisciplinary teams.
