We are now looking for a Research Assistant with an interest in further doctoral studies to join the forensic genetics laboratory unit in Linköping. The unit consists of approximately 15 people who work together to conduct forensic genetic investigations and carry out research for forensic genetic applications.

Your responsibilities

As a Research Assistant, you will participate in research projects aimed at developing new statistical methods for the analysis of low-quality DNA data within forensic genetic questions. Current projects focus, for example, on probabilistic modeling of uncertainties in sequencing-based DNA analyses, and how information from DNA data with low coverage can be better utilized in, for example, forensic genetic identification and kinship investigations. The work includes programming, statistical data analysis, simulations, and the development of analysis methods for genetic data. The position is particularly suitable for those interested in continuing scientific work and doctoral education within forensic genetics, statistical genetics, or bioinformatics.

Qualifications

An academic degree, such as a Master of Science in Engineering, of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level, in fields such as bioinformatics, statistical data analysis, mathematical statistics, biostatistics, genetics, computer science, or another related area deemed relevant by the employer, or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way.

• Documented experience in programming and statistical data processing, for example in R or Python.
• Very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in both Swedish and English.

Merits

• Experience in analyzing genetic data and working in a Linux/Unix environment.
• Good knowledge in statistics, data analysis, or probabilistic modeling.

Personal qualities and skills

We are looking for you with a strong interest in research within forensic genetics, bioinformatics, statistical modeling, or related fields.

You should be proactive, structured, and independent with the ability to drive a research project over time. You also have good teamwork skills, social competence, and the ability to communicate and collaborate in a research environment.

Great importance will be attached to personal suitability, motivation for research work, as well as good academic results and previous relevant academic or professional experience.

The employment

The employment is a fixed-term position at 100% for six months, with the possibility of subsequently applying for a doctoral position within the project. Start date is by agreement. Location in Linköping. The National Board of Forensic Medicine applies individual salary setting.

The Department of Forensic Genetics and Forensic Chemistry (RG/RK) analyzes samples to, among other things, identify the deceased, establish paternity, and trace and determine the concentration of alcohol, narcotics, medicines, and doping preparations. The department is located in Linköping and consists of four units: the forensic genetics laboratory unit, the forensic chemistry laboratory unit, the investigation unit, and the unit for operational support.
