Umeå University is one of Sweden's largest higher education institutions, with over 41,500 students and approximately 4,600 employees. The university offers a diverse range of high-quality educational programs and world-leading research across several scientific fields. It was here that the groundbreaking discovery of the gene-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 was made, an achievement that earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, collaborate, and exchange knowledge, fostering a dynamic and open culture.

The societal transformation and major green investments we see in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, this involves conducting research on – and within – a society in transition. It also means delivering education for regions that need to expand rapidly and sustainably. Simply put, this is where the future is being created.

The Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University is advertising a position as a Project Assistant for the Schröder Lab. The position is a full-time employment for 6 months, with a planned start date of September 1, 2026, or as agreed. The application deadline is July 9, 2026.

Project Description

This research project aims to deepen the understanding of the interaction between the gut microbiota and the host organism, with a particular focus on how diet and microbiota affect the function of the intestinal mucus layer in both health and disease.

The project will be conducted at the Schröder Lab within the Department of Molecular Biology, which is part of the Laboratory of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR).

The position involves the use of various molecular biology methods, ex vivo and in vivo experiments, as well as advanced measurements of mucus layer properties and spatial imaging techniques. Additionally, data-driven analytical methods will be used to interpret the complex datasets generated.

Responsibilities

As a Project Assistant, you will work under supervision to:

  • Plan, perform, and evaluate animal experiments.
  • Perform and analyze functional studies of the mucus layer ex vivo.
  • Assess mucosal inflammation using spatial imaging.
  • Analyze the composition of gut microbiota using advanced methods.
  • Utilize advanced data processing services for bioinformatic analyses.
  • Compile and present results both in writing and orally.

Qualifications

You must hold a Master's degree in mucosal immunology, nutrition, or microbiology. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with prior research experience (at least 6 months) in the aforementioned fields. The candidate must have documented experience in conducting dietary interventions (in humans or rodent models) and working with experimental models of intestinal disease.

Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing and/or work with organoids or advanced cell culture models is desirable.

Applicants must have very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written. Since the project is collaborative in nature, the candidate is expected to have strong teamwork skills.

Very good communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with colleagues, including researchers from complementary fields. Proactivity and holding prestigious scholarships or awards are desirable.

As an employee, you contribute to an inclusive culture and a positive work environment. This means you communicate effectively across different perspectives, demonstrate teamwork, and have a good ability to work together with others. You have an open and welcoming attitude, showing respect, compassion, and empathy. You engage with and support colleagues from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and promote a good work-life balance for yourself and others.

Application

The application should be written in Swedish or English (preferably English). Applications are submitted via our e-recruitment system, Varbi, and must be received by July 9, 2026.

The application should include:

  • A cover letter describing why you are interested in the position and how you can contribute to the project (max 1 A4 page).
  • A curriculum vitae documenting education and previous employment.
  • Name and contact details, including email addresses, for two academic references.
  • Other relevant documents you wish to submit in support of your application.
