The Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University is advertising a position as a Project Assistant for the Schröder Lab. The position is a full-time employment for 6 months, with a planned start date of September 1, 2026, or as agreed. The application deadline is July 9, 2026.
Project Description
This research project aims to deepen the understanding of the interaction between the gut microbiota and the host organism, with a particular focus on how diet and microbiota affect the function of the intestinal mucus layer in both health and disease.
The project will be conducted at the Schröder Lab within the Department of Molecular Biology, which is part of the Laboratory of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR).
The position involves the use of various molecular biology methods, ex vivo and in vivo experiments, as well as advanced measurements of mucus layer properties and spatial imaging techniques. Additionally, data-driven analytical methods will be used to interpret the complex datasets generated.

As a Project Assistant, you will work under supervision to:
Qualifications
You must hold a Master's degree in mucosal immunology, nutrition, or microbiology. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with prior research experience (at least 6 months) in the aforementioned fields. The candidate must have documented experience in conducting dietary interventions (in humans or rodent models) and working with experimental models of intestinal disease.
Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing and/or work with organoids or advanced cell culture models is desirable.
Applicants must have very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written. Since the project is collaborative in nature, the candidate is expected to have strong teamwork skills.
Very good communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with colleagues, including researchers from complementary fields. Proactivity and holding prestigious scholarships or awards are desirable.
