At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across broad areas of knowledge – from molecule to human. The activity consists of five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.

The Department of Neuroscience and Physiology is now seeking a Researcher, placed at the Section of Physiology.

The researcher will work in a project aimed at establishing and optimizing long-term culture of human brain tissue as a platform for translational studies and basic research in neurophysiology.

Responsibilities

The work involves the use of viral vectors for genetic modification of neurons and glial cells, preparation of brain slices from mice and humans, handling of human cerebrospinal fluid, optophysiology/electrophysiology, as well as histology and imaging. The candidate is expected to lead the work of introducing the human model into the laboratory, participate in teaching, and supervise master's students and doctoral students.

Qualifications

A PhD in neuroscience with a focus on neurophysiology and electrophysiology (patch clamp) is required. It is also a requirement that the applicant has very good experience working with genetically encoded tools for manipulating neuronal activity and imaging. Experience in gene modification techniques for microglial cells is desirable. Very good ability to acquire, analyze, and present data within these methods, as well as working independently and authoring scientific papers, is important. Documented experience in obtaining external research funding is highly desirable, as is experience of collaboration with other research groups nationally and internationally. Previous experience of teaching/supervision in electrophysiology and optophysiology is desirable. Excellent oral and written skills in both English and Swedish are required.

Employment

The employment is a fixed-term position for 7 months, 100% full-time, with placement indefinitely at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date: by agreement.
