Laboratory Medicine Västerbotten has approximately 520 employees within the laboratory specialties of clinical pathology, clinical immunology and transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, and clinical genetics. The biobank, infection prevention and control, and tissue establishment are also part of our operations. We are a county organization with activities in Lycksele, Skellefteå, and Umeå. Our operations are accredited according to ISO 15189.

Clinical Chemistry is located at Norrlands University Hospital in Umeå and at the county district hospitals in Lycksele and Skellefteå. Clinical Chemistry has approximately 140 employees, of whom about 100 are based in Umeå. Parts of the operations run 24/7, and Clinical Chemistry in the county delivers approximately 7 million analysis results per year. The laboratory primarily uses ready-made method menus from instrument suppliers.

The laboratory is high-tech and development-intensive, with many complex technical dependencies. We actively work to manage and improve our analysis offerings to provide the best possible service to healthcare. Fast turnaround times are crucial to meet the needs of acute patient handling. As a Hospital Chemist, you are responsible for first-line service of instruments and associated IT support to maintain daily operations and preserve method quality. Business development and management of system support for handling analysis orders and responses to healthcare are also part of the role.

Responsibilities

As a Hospital Chemist with us, you contribute knowledge and dedication that make people feel safe in healthcare.

Our automated operations within Clinical Chemistry are constantly evolving, and digital business support is becoming an increasingly larger part of our daily lives. In this role, you will have an important part, and your responsibilities will include working towards further efficiency and quality development of the technical and digital environment.

You work in first-line service of modern and advanced analysis instruments and automation solutions. This involves both preventive and corrective maintenance of methods and instruments, as well as contact with external service technicians. Problem-solving is part of everyday life. You are also responsible for ensuring that technical procedures exist and are updated, and you actively participate in documentation to comply with quality management systems and accreditation requirements. Procurement with requirement specifications and commissioning of new methods and instruments are included in the work.

The work is carried out in consultation with responsible physicians, other Hospital Chemists, engineers, functional responsible biomedical analysts, and the medical manager/department head. The daily work is very varied, ranging from practical tasks to secure daily operations and quality documentation to participating in and/or leading development projects.

You are stationed in Umeå but have a county-wide assignment.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who are a chemist, civil engineer, or have equivalent education. You have a genuine interest in technology and digitalization, as well as a desire to constantly develop.

Practical experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving regarding analysis methods and instruments is an advantage, but you can also be a recent graduate with curiosity and interest in automated laboratory operations.

You have very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, and can communicate easily with different professional groups.

An interest and ability to independently acquire and convey knowledge around new methods and system support is a prerequisite for functioning well in the technically advanced environment. Great importance is placed on personal suitability.

Internal training and introduction to existing analysis equipment and technical environment takes place continuously during the first years.
