The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, is seeking an Assistant Professor in Archaeology based at Campus Gotland in Visby. This position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic and expanding research environment with nearly one hundred employees across Visby and Uppsala.

The department covers seven main areas: Ancient Culture and Society, Archaeology, Assyriology, Egyptology, Cultural Heritage, Osteology, and Global Environmental History. The operations at Campus Gotland are currently in an expansion phase, employing approximately thirty staff members in cultural heritage, archaeology, and osteology. We aim to further strengthen this environment by recruiting an Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities

The role involves a combination of teaching, research, examination, and administration. You will contribute to high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as participate in course development and pedagogical work. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, and fieldwork, with some courses offered via video link. Teaching, including administration, accounts for a maximum of 50 percent of the position.

Research constitutes at least 50 percent of the full-time position. Your research should strengthen the department's profile in archaeology, with a specific focus on cultural heritage. You are expected to actively participate in interdisciplinary research at Campus Gotland and contribute to securing external research grants to increase the proportion of grant-funded research and recruit new doctoral students.

Qualifications

You must hold a PhD in Archaeology or equivalent scientific competence, and have demonstrated pedagogical skill. Preference is given to candidates who have obtained their PhD or equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application deadline. You should have completed higher education pedagogy training (five weeks) and supervisor training for doctoral students. Documented ability to teach and administer in both Swedish and English is required.

Selection Criteria

Selection among qualified candidates will place special emphasis on both scientific and pedagogical competence, with the highest weight given to scientific skill. Administrative competence and collaboration skills will also be assessed.

Terms of Employment

The position is fixed-term for 48 months (100% full-time) with a six-month probationary period. There is an opportunity to apply for promotion to Associate Professor at the end of the four-year period. The workplace is Visby. Start date is by agreement.
