Job Description

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University is seeking an Assistant Professor in Environmental Science. We are looking for a candidate who can complement our existing research and contribute to the department's long-term strategic development.

The current research in environmental science at the department is primarily conducted within Linnaeus University's Centre for the Environment (CENWIN). Research within CENWIN is strongly linked to geochemical and microbiological issues, focusing on the occurrence, transport, and transformation of potentially harmful substances in natural systems, including their geochemical behavior and connections to both natural and anthropogenic sources. Research within CENWIN also covers environmental risk analysis, particularly related to contaminated sites. Furthermore, the research addresses issues related to industrial ecology, environmental technology, climate change, circular economy, and environmental behavior.

The department offers a bachelor's program in environmental science that prepares students for professional roles requiring broad environmental competence with a natural science foundation, such as environmental inspectors, consultants, environmental coordinators, and strategists. The program includes courses in geology, environmental chemistry, ecology, climate change, ecotoxicology, environmental law, sustainable development and circular economy, environmental management systems, and life cycle assessment. In addition, we offer a one-year master's program in environmental risk analysis with a focus on contaminated sites, as well as a two-year master's program in environmental science that is closely integrated with CENWIN's research profile.

We expect the candidate to establish and lead an independent research activity in environmental science, preferably with connections to one or more of the areas mentioned above, and to actively seek synergies with existing research environments at the department and the university. At least 50% of the position will be allocated to research. In addition, the position includes teaching on our environmental science programs, at both bachelor and advanced levels, and both campus-based and online teaching. Additional duties include supervising students, course development, and participation in the department's activities.

Qualifications

Qualified for appointment as an Assistant Professor is one who has completed a doctoral degree and has an established research profile in environmental science or adjacent research areas deemed relevant to the direction of the position (excluding geochemistry/microbiology). To be qualified, the doctoral degree must have been completed no more than seven years before the last application date. When calculating the seven-year period, deductions shall be made for time during which the applicant was absent due to, for example, illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances (HEO Chapter 4, Section 4a).

For qualification for this position, the following are also required:

  • an active and independent research profile in environmental science,
  • documented ability to obtain external research funding in competition,
  • a strong publication list in peer-reviewed journals relevant to the profile of the position,
  • documented pedagogical skill and experience in teaching and supervision within higher education, preferably at both bachelor, advanced, and doctoral levels,
  • documented ability to collaborate within research groups and with external research partners.

Assessment Criteria

In addition to the formal requirements specified above, the following assessment criteria will be considered:

  • Documented ability to develop courses at the university level,
  • Ability, or willingness to learn, to teach in Swedish,
  • Documented experience with digital teaching and learning platforms,

In the overall assessment of the applicant's skill and competence, special weight will be placed on the applicant's potential for a successful career as an academic teacher and researcher, as well as the ability to create sustainable working relationships and collaborations. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.

When the university hires new teachers, applicants shall be selected who, through a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and skill, are deemed to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing current tasks and contributing to the successful development of the operations.
