We are now recruiting standby rescue personnel – join us at Mälardalen Rescue Service in Surahammar!

Description

We are looking for part-time firefighters for Mälardalen Rescue Service's operations in Surahammar!

As standby rescue personnel (RiB), you have a role alongside your regular job and respond to alarms in the area where you live and work. You will become part of a team responsible for carrying out rescue operations and contributing to safety in society.

About the work

Being a part-time firefighter means you live and work in your daily routine as usual, but during certain weeks you are on standby. This means you must be able to respond when the alarm sounds – regardless of the time of day.

When you are on standby, you carry your pager and must be able to reach the fire station within 5 minutes. From there, you head out on various rescue operations together with your colleagues.

This can involve fires in buildings, vehicles, or in forests and fields. You may also encounter traffic accidents, automatic alarms, acute medical cases where you provide first aid while waiting for an ambulance, or other incidents where people need quick assistance.

Your task is to create safety, help those affected, and limit damage as much as possible, together with your colleagues.

Between alarms, you train and educate yourselves regularly. You become part of a group where collaboration, responsibility, and trust are crucial.

About the assignment

  • Standby according to schedule, usually every third or fourth week. A standby week is 168 hours (24/7 for seven days).
  • Opportunity to swap standby shifts with colleagues if needed.
  • You are based at the fire station in Surahammar.
  • You participate in exercises for approximately 3 hours per week, usually in the evenings during your standby week.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who:

  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Have a driver's license, category B or higher.
  • Have good physical fitness and health (including passing a treadmill test with equipment at 4.5 km/h) and meet swimming requirements with a certificate (Swedish Life Saving Society's "Golden Buoy").
  • Can remain calm and make decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Have good teamwork skills.
  • Need to live and work such that you can reach the fire station within 5 minutes when on standby.
  • Previous experience from rescue services, healthcare, or other operational activities is meritorious but not required. We cover all your training required to become a part-time firefighter.

Important to know

  • The role of part-time firefighter is a side job and cannot be a full-time position. You have another main employer or primary occupation.
  • You have the opportunity to leave your main job immediately upon alarm.
  • You are expected to maintain good physical fitness to handle the assignment.
  • We conduct annual medical check-ups and offer PSA tests for employees over 50 years old.
  • We conduct alcohol tests within the association for all personnel.
  • We are recruiting over the next 6 months and filling positions on an ongoing basis.

We offer

  • Paid training to become a part-time firefighter.
  • Regular exercises and continuous competence development.
  • A varied and socially important assignment.
  • Compensation according to the current collective agreement for standby rescue personnel (RiB 25).
  • Access to training and gym 24/7.
  • Wellness benefit in the form of shoe allowance (1,000 SEK/year).
  • Work clothes and equipment (uniform).
  • Opportunities for further development and career within the rescue service.

We warmly welcome your application!
