Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you meet 2,200 employees and 40,000 students who together follow the vision of putting knowledge into motion for sustainable societal development. At our university, research and education are conducted with a focus on the future. Our proximity to the business community, both locally and globally, gives us long reach and the opportunity for change that leaves a mark. All that is needed is a place where ideas have room to meet and grow. That is what we have created – and you are invited. Change starts here!
The Faculty of Technology is one of Linnaeus University's five faculties. We bring together the university's education and research in technical subjects. The operations are organized into eight departments and a faculty office. Here you will also find the Linnaeus University Centre DISA and two Linnaeus Knowledge Environments: Green Sustainable Development and Digital Transformations. Several of the faculty's research groups collaborate within the strength area 'Values of the Forest'.
The Department of Mathematics has approximately 70 employees distributed across the subjects of mathematics, physics, and mathematics didactics. Within mathematics, research is conducted in analysis, computational mathematics, mathematics for AI and machine learning, dynamic systems and mathematical modeling, as well as probability theory with applications.
Subject area for the position: Mathematics
Location (permanent): Växjö. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between locations may occur.
Employment scope and duration: The position as Licentiate (PhD student aiming for a Licentiate degree) is fixed-term according to the Swedish Higher Education Act, Chapter 5, Section 7. The scope is full-time.
Start date: Half-yearly transition in 2026, by agreement.
Job Description
The work for this position takes place within the framework of an interdisciplinary project in collaboration between forestry science and mathematics. The Licentiate project is funded by Nordforsk within the framework of the project Decision support for Individual-Tree-Selection (DITS).
Within the research group, mathematical theories, methods, and models for optimization and artificial intelligence are developed with applications in sustainable forestry.
The current doctoral project concerns research on mathematical methods and models for optimization in selection forestry. The duties include both theoretical research in AI and machine learning, as well as associated data collection and handling, programming, and computer experiments. The duties also include acquiring and developing domain-specific knowledge in application areas through collaboration across subject boundaries and between academia and industry.
The Swedish Higher Education Act states that those employed as doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their doctoral studies. However, an employee may, to a limited extent, work with education, research, and administration. Such work may, before the Licentiate degree has been awarded, not exceed 20% of full working time.
Qualifications
Basic eligibility is held by those who, no later than the start date of employment:
- Have completed an advanced level degree,
- Have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- Have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.
Special eligibility is held by those who, no later than the start date of employment:
- Have at least 120 higher education credits in the subject of mathematics or in subjects related to doctoral-level education, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other order within or outside the country.
- Have good language skills in Swedish and/or English.
See the general study plan for doctoral education in mathematics for more information about the education.
Desirable Merits
Master's degree in mathematics or equivalent, documented proficiency in programming, and documented proficiency in project work, preferably with applications in selection forestry.
Assessment Criteria
Applications for doctoral education are regulated by the admissions regulations.
Selection of applicants is made with regard to the applicants' ability to benefit from doctoral-level education. The assessment takes into account scientific proficiency documented in scientific works, particularly the quality of essays at basic level, advanced level, and other scientific works.
The assessment also takes into account the breadth and composition of the basic degree and the impression that the proposed main supervisor, examiner, and other colleagues within the research group and subject get of the applicant's prerequisites. The applicants are ranked by an assessment group appointed by the subject.
Welcome to submit your application by June 7, 2026.
