Together with Region Stockholm, we have the ultimate responsibility to carry out the handling and transport of deceased individuals from private homes and the region's healthcare facilities. The unit performs its work with great dignity and respect for the deceased and their relatives, making a significant contribution at the beginning of the grieving process for the bereaved.
What does the work in the unit for transport of the deceased involve?
At the unit in Solna, three specially equipped vehicles operate and transport the deceased throughout Stockholm County. The transports take place from both private homes and healthcare facilities. There is at least one vehicle in service around the clock with additional staffing during the day and evening. Each vehicle consists of a crew of two employees. In 2025, approximately 6,000 assignments were completed.
What are the procedures for picking up a deceased person?
“Before transport from a private home is carried out, the staff always contacts the deceased's relatives or the person who ordered the transport to agree on a time for pickup. The hearse is equipped with several different stretchers and equipment required for handling the deceased, and a canopy is stretched over the stretcher when the deceased is in place, so that the transport from the home is as dignified and discreet as possible.”
