Research Leader in Leadership and Management
The Swedish Defence University is an internationally prominent institution in defense, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where civilian meets military. We educate civilian and military leaders, experts, and researchers who will analyze and manage today's and future crisis situations and security problems. The Swedish Defence University trains Sweden's officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law with a focus on operational law and international law, defense systems, war science, leadership and management, military history, and political science.
The Department of Leadership and Management educates and researches on leading during societal interventions in connection with a crisis or war situation and what must be done to achieve set goals. Leadership development, crisis and risk management, as well as recruitment and selection are also areas we educate and research in. The staff teaches in the Master's program in Leadership and Management for Defense, Crisis Management, and Security, the Officer Program, and the Higher Officer Program.
Description of the Subject of Leadership and Management
Leadership and management have their empirical foundation in the needs and challenges that are typical, and to some extent common, for actors and organizations within defense, crisis management, and security.
Leadership and management is a social science that draws and develops knowledge from behavioral science and design science. Within the subject, questions concerning the significance of stressful conditions, leadership and management theory, leadership development, collaboration, crisis management, design of management systems, team issues, and selection are studied. There is also a strong interest in gender, methodology, and ethics within the subject.
Job Responsibilities
The Department of Leadership and Management is now recruiting a researcher in leadership and management with a focus on collaboration and leadership within total defense. The position is primarily aimed at junior researchers.
The main job responsibilities include research within the framework of an existing research project focusing on how leadership and collaboration are practiced within the Swedish total defense and in similar systems internationally. Your main task is to design and conduct a limited study relevant to the research project. The work may, but does not have to, involve the collection of empirical data. The research will primarily be conducted independently but also together with other researchers in the project.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who has:
- completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is assessed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree in a relevant subject. Great emphasis will be placed on the degree's relevance to the research project.
- good knowledge of the Swedish total defense system
- good knowledge of research on collaboration (collaborative governance or equivalent).
It is advantageous to have knowledge of civil-military collaboration.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities, and as a person, you are structured, proactive, and have excellent collaboration skills. You have the ability to independently conduct research within the framework of the described research project.
To manage the job responsibilities, you must have very good language skills in both Swedish and English, as well as good communication skills that enable you to communicate research results clearly and well-formulated, both orally and in writing, to the wider community. You also have good analytical skills. As a person, you have high social competence and enjoy meeting new people and can also work independently to drive your own research within the framework of the research project.

About the Position
The position is located at the department in Stockholm, which has about 30 employees.
The position is a fixed-term employment of 50% from 2025-03-01 and at most until 2025-12-31.
Start date according to agreement.
An employment at the Swedish Defence University may involve a security clearance according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585).
The Swedish Defence University has a war organization, which means that you may be placed in a war position. If you are already placed in a war position in your current employment at an authority and your competence is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant authority and the Swedish Defence University regarding where you will be placed.
