Hydrography, Operational Hydrographic Surveying
The Swedish Maritime Administration conducts hydrographic surveying activities with several vessels along the entire Swedish coast, collecting depth data that is then used as a basis for nautical charts and other products. Hydrographic surveying is therefore a central core activity within the Swedish Maritime Administration. Hydrographic information is an important part for society and the business community to have access to an efficient and sustainable transport system.
Working as a Steersman/Surveyor at the Swedish Maritime Administration
Your main tasks as a steersman and surveyor on the Swedish Maritime Administration's hydrographic survey vessels are to participate in the daily hydrographic surveying operations as a watch officer and to collect and post-process data in our internal systems. As a steersman, you also perform simple maintenance and checks according to tasks in the maintenance system in consultation with the captain. The vessels are essentially always in operation, with different crews, which means you will work two weeks in a row, followed by two weeks off. Service on other vessels or land service may occur. Employees within the hydrographic surveying operations are expected to serve on all units within the hydrographic surveying operations. Since the vessels are a bit smaller, everyone on board is expected to help for efficient operation.
Who are you?
To be considered for the role of Steersman, you must have:
- At least a certificate of competency for ship's officer class VI (not limited to inland waters)
- At least a diploma in engineering officer class VIII
- Driving license B
- Valid approved medical certificate for seafarers
- Other necessary certificates and qualifications (all according to STCW Manila) for a steersman position
- Current experience of operating smaller vessels in archipelago environments (within the last 5 years)
- Good computer skills and experience working in various systems/programs
It is advantageous if you have:
- A clear interest in hydrographic surveying as this is the main activity for our hydrographic survey vessels
- Worked on smaller vessels where the entire crew helps to ensure safe and efficient operation
- Current work experience with vessel-related maintenance systems (for example, CCOM)
- Current experience of maintenance work on smaller vessels
We place great importance on your personal qualities. To function well both in the group and with the tasks, you must have good collaboration skills, be persistent, quality-conscious, and self-driven.
The position may require Swedish citizenship. A security check with a background check may be conducted before an employment offer.
