Field Leader for River Restoration Activities

In the unit, we work with project activities related to nature and water conservation. We are involved in projects related to both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species, restoration of watercourses, and protection of endangered species.

We are now looking for a field leader for the river restoration activities.

About the Job

The main tasks will be to participate in field activities related to river restoration. The work to restore waterways that have been cleared for log driving will take place within the Voxnan and Ljusnan catchment areas. The restoration work is primarily part of the EU project Rivers of LIFE (LIFE18 NAT/SE/000268) and mainly within the municipalities of Ljusdal and Ovanåker. Leadership in other waterways may also be relevant.

To carry this out, we need to hire up to 3 people. The positions vary in duration and will be adapted to the activities for about 5-9 months with a chance of extension.

The positions involve weekly overnight stays in locations other than Gävle as the fieldwork is carried out in the municipalities of Ljusdal and Ovanåker. Preparatory and concluding work, including handling field equipment, is done at the County Administrative Board's premises in Gävle.

The position includes the following tasks:

• Plan and lead the work to restore waterways, which is done together with excavator operators in a work team that is quality assured by a coordinator
• Documentation and follow-up during the work process
• Conduct chainsaw and clearing work
• Manual restoration
• Work with some of the project's target species, the freshwater pearl mussel and the moss Skapania

Preparations, action inventories, data entry, and compilation of completed restorations may be included in the tasks. In case of machine stoppage, other work-related tasks may also occur. The County Administrative Board is responsible for providing necessary equipment, training, and introduction to the tasks.

Start date at the earliest 2026-03-01, but most positions will be postponed.

About You

You should have previous experience in similar tasks. You should have a scientific education with relevant orientation or work experience deemed equivalent. You should have good collaboration skills, be proactive, flexible, and quality-conscious. It is also important that you have the ability to work independently and can solve problems that arise. The work also involves external contacts, which requires you to clearly convey the County Administrative Board's views both verbally and in writing.

The following competencies are meritorious:

• Previous experience of large-scale restorations in waterways where you have led excavator operators
• Education and experience in the latest biotope mapping methodologies
• Advanced GIS skills, preferably ArcGIS
• Electrofishing certificate/experience in electrofishing
• Experience with the applications Fieldmaps and Survey 123
• Brushcutter training/Brushcutter license (RA or higher)
• Knowledge of flora and fauna
• Driver's license for heavy trailers, i.e., Extended B/B96/BE

You must have the ability to walk in rugged terrain, wade in flowing water for a large part of the day, carry field equipment to and from the waterways, and possibly create spawning beds and fell trees with a chainsaw. We place great emphasis on personal qualities.

A B driver's license is required.
