Summer Interns at the Swedish Food Agency 2026
Do you want to contribute to good animal welfare and ensure that the food we eat is safe? Do you want to contribute to a secure and stable food production? Whether you are a veterinarian with extensive experience or looking forward to your first summer as a temporary veterinarian, you now have the opportunity to try an interesting veterinary role in the summer of 2026.
We are looking for summer interns in several locations across the country during the summer of 2026! If you want to work for a longer period than the summer, many teams offer that possibility.
A sustainable employment
The Swedish Food Agency actively works to offer all employees sustainable employment. We provide you with a solid introduction when you start with us and offer secure working conditions and good benefits. Subsidized massage and daytime work without on-call, evening, and weekend duties are some of these. We want you to feel that it is fun to go to work and that what you do is important. As an official veterinarian, you contribute to Sweden having good animal welfare and safe food.
As a veterinarian at the Swedish Food Agency
As a veterinarian at the Swedish Food Agency, you will work independently, but in difficult decisions and situations, your knowledgeable colleagues are often nearby or at least just a phone call away. Here, you become part of a team where we help and support each other in our daily work. Together, we make a difference!
A socially important mission
As an official veterinarian, you contribute to Sweden having good animal welfare and safe food. In your work, you are responsible for the inspection of live animals and post-slaughter inspections. You work to detect any shortcomings in animal welfare by examining the animals arriving at the slaughterhouse and how the company's employees handle the animals. You ensure that the animals are healthy at both the individual and herd level and assess whether the meat after slaughter can be approved as food.
As an authority representative, you have an important mission towards the entrepreneur. You have a control function but should also act as support and facilitate for the entrepreneur to do the right thing. You do this by informing about what good animal welfare means and helping to create an understanding of hygiene and food safety in food production.
During the summer, you will have good opportunities to deepen your knowledge in pathology, microbiology, and food safety, while also learning a lot about food production. You will receive a thorough introduction to the work and become part of a competent team that you can always turn to for support and guidance. In the work for safe food and good animal welfare, you play a significant role.
Your competencies
The tasks will be adapted to the experience you bring. You can be an experienced veterinarian with a Swedish veterinary license, but you can also be a veterinary student who has applied for and been granted a temporary veterinary license from the Swedish Board of Agriculture. Read more about what is required to be granted a temporary veterinary license and how to apply for it on the Swedish Board of Agriculture's website.
You need to have good administrative skills, good knowledge of Swedish in both spoken and written form, and be able to understand and make yourself understood in English. A B driver's license is required.
As a person, you need to be flexible, punctual, and able to make your own well-founded decisions and initiatives. You have high personal maturity with the ability to reflect on your own strengths and areas for development and can see and contribute to the whole. You dare to make the decisions required in consultation with your colleagues and manager.
You have good collaboration skills and enjoy creating good relationships. You are happy to share your knowledge and experience while being open to learning from others, as it is together with your colleagues that you succeed and develop. Conversations in meetings with entrepreneurs and in contact with other stakeholders are also part of the work, which requires you to be clear, professional, and attentive in your communication. We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
