Conservation Manager at the County Administrative Board of Gotland
The County Administrative Board operates on behalf of the government and works to ensure that national goals are implemented in the region. Our broad activities encompass environmental, nature, cultural heritage, business, community planning, rural, preparedness, and total defense issues. In dialogue with other stakeholders, we coordinate various interests and promote sustainable development in Gotland.
We have over 150 employees, and our head is Governor Charlotte Petri Gornitzka.
Description
The County Administrative Board of Gotland is now seeking a full-time conservation manager for practical conservation management work.
The Conservation Unit has about 20 employees who work with the management of protected areas, action programs for endangered species, wetland restorations, outdoor recreation, and supervision of Gotska Sandön.
Workplace
Nature reserves in Gotland with stationing at the workshop in Visby.
Gotland has over 160 nature reserves, and it is the County Administrative Board that manages and maintains most of them. Many services are contracted out to external entrepreneurs, but the County Administrative Board has a staffed workshop, with 2.5 full-time positions, that performs some of the practical management.
Job Responsibilities
The work involves practical tasks in nature reserves throughout the region. A smaller part of the time is spent indoors at the workshop in Visby. Job tasks also include participating in workplace meetings in the County Administrative Board's premises and staff days, among others. Conservation management tasks such as mowing, simple carpentry of stairs and gates, tree felling, setting up reserve signs, placing benches and tables, and processing windfall, among others. Maintenance of archaeological objects is also included and takes place outside of nature reserves.
Qualifications
Since the majority of the tasks are practical, you should have practical skills. You should have an easy time collaborating. You are a representative and meet visitors in the region's protected areas. Therefore, it is an advantage if you are outgoing and have good communication skills. You should be interested in nature and have knowledge and understanding of the County Administrative Board's mission, especially regarding the protection and management of valuable nature.
You have good physical condition due to partially heavy work. You should have a good ability to take initiative and be able to work independently. The work also involves solitary work in the field and includes longer driving distances as you operate throughout Gotland.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Driving license BE
- Chainsaw training certificate, level AB
- Brushcutter RA
Desirable:
- Experience in public administration
- A strong interest in nature and outdoor activities.
- An interest in cultural history
- Basic first aid knowledge (CPR)
- Chainsaw C
- Cherry picker license
- Experience as a carpenter, janitor, forestry worker, or similar.
We place great emphasis on personal qualities.
Other
As the position is classified, a security clearance with an accompanying background check will be conducted in the event of a potential employment. Citizenship will be considered during the security clearance.
The County Administrative Board has coordination responsibility within both crisis preparedness and total defense in the region. This means that you as an employee may be part of the crisis management organization and may be assigned to military service.
